What do you use as a bear bag?

Hey guys!
Thank you all for the advice yesterday on the guide book in my previous thread. I'm curious as to what others choose to use for a bear bag. I have about a 2 week period of time off coming up in mid September. So I decided, what a better way to spend two weeks off then to spend some serious time in the Adirondacks. I'm planning on starting the 46 on this trip, but since I'll have my dog whose never hiked in mountains before along with me, I only plan to hit only one maybe two high peaks than spend a night. As bear canisters are required in the Eastern High Peaks region, I'll be renting one from the HPIC. But since I'll have so much time for this trip, the plan is to drive to another area of the park to spend the remainder of my two weeks. Undecided on the location yet. Possibly the Five Ponds Wilderness, or the West Canada Lakes. So for this part of my trip outside the high peaks I'll be hanging my food. This brings me back to my original inquiry of what do you all use? I'm highly considering a Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil dry sack, as I'll be out for so long I figure the chance of seeing rain is pretty high, so waterproofness is important to me. And yes I'll be stopping to resupply after the high peaks if necessary to ensure the pup and I have enough food.

take care ya'll
Steve

and maybe we'll see ya out in the woods!

Sand lake falls trail parking

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone knows how far you would be able to drive in and park to hike to sand lake falls. I read that bear creek road turns into another road right that can be driven down with a 4x4 vehicle after the parking area. Just wondering if this is correct or not because everything else I've read talks about hiking that road. Hiking the entire way is fine with me I'm just wondering so that I can plan better. I have a stock Jeep Wrangler. Thanks everyone. also if you have any tips or must do/see side trips near there would really appreciate that as well. I plan on going in Friday evening and staying in the area until Sunday afternoon.

Discover The Adk's Guide book series?

I'm gearing up for a high peaks adventure in mid September to start the 46.
I've went ahead and purchased this map.

https://www.adk.org/product/trails-o...igh-peaks-map/

But I would also like to buy a guide book for the region. I've heard wonderful things about the Discover series, but it seems this book is not available.

http://www.hiketheadirondacks.com/pa...ack_High_Peaks

Does anyone know where I could possibly find one? Or perhaps suggest an alternative?

thanks guys
Steve

Waterfalls of Catlin Brook Gorge- SGL 57 (PA)

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...d-gorge-in-pa/

The most rugged gorge in PA, at one point the creek drops 800 feet over a quarter mile. There are over ten waterfalls, cliffs, ledges, and countless springs pouring from the earth. Three falls were close together, and exceeded 100 feet in height. We also passed a high elevation wet meadow with wildflowers and an osprey hunting for a meal. It was a long hike into the gorge, but scenic with spruce forests and cascading streams. A place of incredible beauty.

About The Primitive Campsites On Cedar River Flow

Anyone familiar with the 7 or 8 water-access-only/paddle-to sites along the E shore of the flow know if any of them have privies/outhouses?

Destination Suggestions 2-3 night solo trip

Got some ‘me’ time coming up. Was going to base myself at Lila for a couple of days - but taking suggestions for other places to get away - I need quiet, dark skies (hoping to do some more night sky photography), non-technical water if a boat is involved, would prefer to setup camp and stay put, with hike / paddles nearby. Will be solo. Would entertain paddles / lake / pond sites, or moderate hike / bike trip. Self sufficient, have plenty of gear. Not looking to do a loop or epic traverse. More of a chill out trip - but I do want to get away. Fewer people the better.

2-3 days. Maybe 4 if I push the envelope. Mid to late September.
Where would you go?

Hector Falls-Allegheny National Forest

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...tional-forest/

A unique 22 foot falls that plummets over the 90 degree angle of a square cliff when there is enough water, creating a visual spectacle. The water wasn't quite high enough on my hike, but it was still beautiful. Below the falls is a grotto of giant boulders, moss, and roots clinging to the rock. Above is a hemlock forest. The ANF plans to have an official trailhead and trail to the falls in the near future.

Dewdrop Run-Allegheny National Forest

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...tional-forest/

A hidden gem in the ANF, once home to the now abandoned Campbell Mill Loop trail. Not sure why it was abandoned as Dewdrop Run is gorgeous with waterfalls and cascades over mossy boulders. In one place, house sized monoliths loom over the creek. The greenery was incredible. This place was a pleasure to explore.

Rimrock Overlook-Allegheny National Forest

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...tional-forest/

A popular overlook with cliffs and a stone staircase through a cave or chasm. A quick hike, but well worth it if you are ever in the ANF.

The Big Four, Northrup and two nice erratics

I prepared for a return to the West Canada Wilderness with hours of map study and by reading the journals of early 20th century adventurers Bob Gillespie and Harvey Dunham. I wanted to spend time around the big four, West, South, Mud and Brooktrout Lakes. I also had an itch to visit tiny Northrup and explore the headwaters of the Indian River. Satellite imagery revealed a pair of large glacial erratics in the vicinity, because they were discernable from outer space, I added the big rocks to my list of things to visit.

I would enter the area via the Old Military Road and pond hop my way to the interior using Pillsbury and Cedar Lakes. Mud Creek is navigable south of its intersect with the Northville Placid Trail which will put you in Mud Lake, where short carries lead to the other members of the big four.

Jakes Rocks-Allegheny National Forest

https://endlessmountains.wordpress.c...tional-forest/

A place of impressive cliffs, overhangs, crevices, and views. Now home to a premier mountain bike trail system. A quick hike, but well worth it.

McMartin's "Little Great Range" hike?

Has this been done, attempted, or is it a waste of time with no official trail (e.g., choked with conifers, witchhobble, or otherwise too brutal to attempt).

I was thinking of attempting a route that takes me from Little Moose pond over Pillsbury, up Blue Ridge, and then connecting the dots to Snowy. The guidebook describes the 'whack up Blue Ridge as "difficult", but it can't be any worse than what I did last weekend (not that I particularly want to replicate that for 3 or 4 days). If all the summits are like Wakely then I would think it would be exceedingly slow going and generally pointless.

Thanks for any info.

Kunjamuk Cave question

Yesterday we attempted to follow an allegedly recent brochure's directions to the Kunjamuk Cave from Route 30 about 3 miles south of Speculator. The brochure said to cross the old iron bridge and look for an unmarked foot path on the left approximately 100 feet past the bridge. Assuming the bridge in question is the Christine Falls Bridge since that's the only bridge crossing the Sacandaga about 3 miles south of the 4 corners in Speculator, does anyone know of the existence of a foot path in this location? Or is it possible that this "footpath" is actually Cave Hill Road, and maybe these were outdated directions stemming from the days when IP owned the land and a permit was needed to hike there?

WCLW Wandering 8/25-8/26/2018

I was kind of embarrassed when I realized that hadn't spent a night in the 'Daks since this spring. Luckily I am well versed at cramming many of my obligations into my weekly routine and ignoring all the others :D

I arrived the the tent village errrr trail head parking lot around 8:30. But seriously 4 tents was easily a new record! (PSA: if you havn't figured it out yet, you're not supposed to do this!). I made the quick hike into an empty Philsbury Lean-to :banghead:

Both Saturday and Sunday were spent exploring seldom used trails, intriguing points of interest on old maps, old roads on old maps, and old roads not on any map. Even got in a little bit of fishing time although it wasn't fruitful.

On Saturday night I spent a little time turning the fire table back into a fire pit at the lean-to. I got the impression it has been a long long time since it has seen some love.

The highlight of the weekend was exploring an old camp where some of the lumber used for its structures was still present - although severely rotted of course.

Step 1: dig a small pit, Step 2: Ring it all the way around with stones, Step 3: put the fire out COMPLETELY before you leave!

The NPT-west. Yeah, it's a thing (maybe).

I have hiked the Northville-Placid Trail (NPT) a few times now. Most recently with my friend Andy in July. while planning for our adventure, I reminded myself of an idea I had been brewing for a few years. The NPT-west. The NPT was the first project of the Adirondack Mountain Club in 1922, and completed in 1924. there have been some changes to it, reroutes and additional sections. But for the most part it is the same 140 mile "straight" trail between Northville and Lake Placid. Being in western, NY I have an affinity for the western regions of the Adirondacks and envisioned a western arc trail also connecting Northville to Lake Placid. In conjunction with the current NPT, this would create a giant loop (or backwards D). The conceptual trail I have put together is approx 260 miles and uses existing trail corridors. It actually has less road walking than the original NPT in 1924. Together with the current NPT, this would be approx 400 miles, from start to finish (start). There is mush of it I have not actually walked, so this trip would be my official start of the NPT-west.

Older Death on Gothics

Good grief, it says that I was last on these forums on August 19, 2010!

In any event, on Tuesday, I'm making a guest appearance in the mountains and hauling my 70 year old carcass up the cable route to Gothics. We had overcome the torrent in Ore Brook Slide (new to me) and now faced the 300 foot vertical slab. One by one, hand over hand, we struggled to haul ourselves and the dogs up by the cables buffeted by the strong wind. But now we had another hundred feet to climb – still some smooth, vertical slab with no cable to grab, no handhold, no foothold. There was no going down. I move left and managed to find a small toe hold, grab a small vein in the stone and haul myself up to where I could grab a small boulder. I reached down and pulled my granddaughter up and threw her down under the stone wondering why we were doing this without being roped together. She says “Someone died here.” “What do you mean?” “Someone died here”, she insists, and pointed to a very small commemorative plaque ankle high on the side of the rock. I can only glance at it. February 2004 or maybe 2006 is all I take. Sorry lad, no time to say a prayer or reflect on your life, as I fear we are in mortal danger ourselves and need to find a way off this face.

Figure I should maybe do that now. Does anyone have information on who this person was and his or her circumstances at about 4,600 feet? Thanks.

1-in-4 Would Rather Be Caught Naked Than Go Without Their Connected Device!!

From helping us get from A to B, to ordering food and staying in touch with friends, the digital world has now become so ingrained in our daily lives that not having internet access can be a major concern. In fact, people today are so reliant on connectivity that 23% would prefer to be caught naked in public than not have their connected device with them, according to new research from Kaspersky Lab. Properly looking after our devices and ensuring a stable connection wherever we are, and whatever we are doing, is therefore more important than ever.

Think about a normal day in your life. How much do you rely on an active internet connection? Do you think you would be able to get through a day without any internet at all?

If your answer is ‘no’, you’re not the only one. Staying connected is now a life essential for many users, especially when they are on the go. As such, over a fifth (22%) of respondents to a recent Kaspersky Lab survey say that being connected is as important to them as having easy access to food, water and shelter.

Our reliance on devices, and the connectivity they provide, is now so strong that losing a smartphone or tablet can be more stressful than many other traumatic situations. Nearly all respondents (90%) said they would feel stressed if their device was lost or stolen, which is higher than missing a train/airplane (88%), being involved in a minor car accident (88%), or getting sick (80%).

What’s more, people are prepared to risk embarrassment and even personal harm in order to stay connected. For example, 26% have looked at their phone screen when crossing the street and 21% when walking in an unknown/dangerous area. In addition, 1-in-5 said they feel naked without their connected device.

This is something that Kaspersky Lab investigated further in a recent experiment, when one helpless and naked volunteer was tasked to try and locate his clothes in an unknown city, without a phone and all advantages it gives. As our study and this social experiment have demonstrated, going without a connected device is like being naked.

“Connectivity has quickly become a staple of modern life and for many, an absolute necessity. Our desire to be online at all times, and the things we are prepared to do to maintain that digital connection, highlights how important connected devices are to us. However, with connectivity extending into all aspects of our lives, security can’t be overlooked, and should be there, whatever you are doing and wherever you are. Users need to ensure that, no matter the situation, their connection remains secure,” says Dmitry Aleshin, VP for Product Marketing, Kaspersky Lab.

There is a way for consumers to achieve this balance. Kaspersky Security Cloud is able to adapt to people’s connectivity needs and contains several features to help Mac, Windows, iOS and Android users live their digital lives without the risk of losing their connectivity when it’s needed most:

• When you can’t afford for your computer to let you down, Hard Drive Health Monitor predicts and tracks errors to your computer’s hard drive.

• If your device is lost or stolen, the Anti-Theft feature will help you locate and get your Android device back – for example by turning on the alarm, locking and locating the device, and even take a mugshot of the person using the device.

• If you are relying on public Wi-Fi to stay connected – Secure Connection allows you to protect your information by encrypting all your traffic so that no-one else can intercept and misuse your data.

• If you are afraid of your battery to run low – Device Power Consumption tells you how much battery you have left on your Android device, and how much time you have before it runs out.

• If your children are away from home and you want them to stay connected – Battery Tracker, a new feature in Kaspersky Safe Kids, notifies parents when the battery level gets low on their children’s mobile devices.

Lazarus has Risen Again

AppleJeus: Lazarus group hunts cryptocurrency exchanges using macOS malware

Researchers in Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) have discovered AppleJeus - a new malicious operation by the infamous Lazarus group. The attackers penetrated the network of a cryptocurrency exchange in Asia using Trojanized cryptocurrency trading software. The goal of the attack was to steal cryptocurrency from their victims. In addition to Windows-based malware, researchers were able to identify a previously unknown version targeting the macOS platform.

This is the first case where Kaspersky Lab researchers have observed the notorious Lazarus group distributing malware that targets macOS users, and it represents a wakeup call for everyone who uses this OS for cryptocurrency-related activity.

Based on the analysis by GReAT, the penetration of the stock exchange’s infrastructure began when an unsuspecting company employee downloaded a third-party application from the legitimate looking website of a company that develops software for cryptocurrency trading.
The application’s code is not suspicious, with the exception of one component – an updater. In legitimate software such components are used to download new versions of programs. In the case of AppleJeus, it acts like a reconnaissance module: first it collects basic information about the computer it has been installed on, then it sends this information back to the command and control server and, if the attackers decide that the computer is worth attacking, the malicious code comes back in the form of a software update.

The malicious update installs a Trojan known as Fallchill, an old tool that the Lazarus group has recently switched back to. This fact provided the researchers with a base for attribution. Upon installation, the Fallchill Trojan provides the attackers with almost unlimited access to the attacked computer, allowing them to steal valuable financial information or to deploy additional tools for that purpose.

The situation was exacerbated by the fact that the criminals have developed software for both the Windows and macOS platform. The latter is generally far less exposed to cyberthreats than Windows. The functionality of both platform versions of the malware is exactly the same.
Another unusual thing about the AppleJeus operation is that while it looks like a supply-chain attack, in reality this may not be the case. The vendor of the cryptocurrency trading software that was used to deliver the malicious payload to the victims’ computers has a valid digital certificate for signing its software and legitimate looking registration records for the domain.

However – at least based on publicly available information – Kaspersky Lab researchers could not identify any legitimate organization located at the address used in the certificate’s information.

We noticed a growing interest of the Lazarus Group in cryptocurrency markets at the beginning of 2017, when Monero mining software was installed on one of their servers by a Lazarus operator. Since then, they have been spotted several times targeting cryptocurrency exchanges alongside regular financial organizations. The fact that they developed malware to infect macOS users in addition to Windows users and – most likely – even created an entirely fake software company and software product in order to be able to deliver this malware undetected by security solutions, means that they see potentially big profits in the whole operation, and we should definitely expect more such cases in the near future. For macOS users this case is a wakeup call, especially if they use their Macs to perform operations with cryptocurrencies,” notes Vitaly Kamluk, Head of GReAT APAC team at Kaspersky Lab.

The Lazarus group, known for its sophisticated operations and links to North Korea is noted not only for its cyberespionage and cybersabotage attacks, but also for financially motivated attacks. A number of researchers, including at Kaspersky Lab, have previously reported on this group targeting banks and other large financial enterprises.

In order to protect yourself and your company from sophisticated cyberattacks from groups like Lazarus, Kaspersky Lab security experts advise the following:

• Do not automatically trust the code running on your systems. Neither an authentic looking website, nor a solid company profile, nor digital certificates guarantee the absence of backdoors.

• Use a robust security solution, equipped with malicious-behavior detection technologies that enable even previously unknown threats to be caught.

• Subscribe your organization’s security team to a high quality threat intelligence reporting service in order to get early access to information on the most recent developments in the tactics, techniques and procedures of sophisticated threat actors.

• Use multi-factor authentication and hardware wallets if you are dealing with significant financial transactions. For this purpose, preferably use a standalone, isolated computer that you do not use to browse the internet or read email.

Aug 7- West Jimmy Creek Falls

The family took our annual trip to Wells during the week of Aug 4-11. We were fortunate to be there for Old Homes Days which was fun.

On the Tuesday, the kids were fishing with a friend they met and my wife was reading a book, so i decided to take care of some "unfinished" business at West Jimmy Creek Falls. I say unfinished because my son, a friend and his son attempted this hike on a whim 3 years prior. We were out for a bike ride around the lake and i mentioned that the falls was "just" down West River Rd. I hadn't exactly mapped how far the falls was, nor did i appreciate the hilly nature of things on a bike vs a car. By the time we got to Jimmy Creek, the kids... then 8yrs old were already exhausted. We were out of water too. Anyhow we made it into the woods and got as far as the small lower falls before we turned back as we still had the long bike ride back.

This time I drove to the creek, passing it by some margin avoiding the private land near the creek mouth. After a mildly hairy trip over the hill and down to the creek, i followed the creek path for a while, before rock hopping the rest of the way to the falls. When i caught my first glimpse of the falls, i was surprised how high they were. I really wished the rest of the gang from 3 years back would have been there to see it with me. After a quick refreshing dip at the base, i made my way back to the cabin.

Later in the week, the family ventured out to Holmes Lake, Chimney Mt, and twice went to Christine Falls. Another great week for the family!

Round Lake Whitney Wilderness Fishing

One more.....Is Round Lake in the Whitney Wilderness a warm water bass type fishery or a cold water trout fishery? Planning a solo canoe camping fishing trip for Thursday through Labor Day at the end of the month but have not decided where, but I want to know what kind of tackle to bring if I decide to go there....

Also, since it is a bigger lake and I will have a pack canoe, does it get really windy and potentially dangerous?

Thanks!

Phil

Exceptional Overnighters

Starting to think about a fall overnight toward the end of September but I have a few restrictions.

I will be taking an older dog who can't walk all that far. He is good for about 4-5 miles in a day. I'm good with hiking all day, but I don't think he'd make it. He doesn't much care for the canoe, so paddling is out.

So exceptional fall backpacking overnight less than 5 miles from a parking area. Most likely less distance if there is a lot of elevation gain.

Remoteness (as much as you can get with a short hike) is nice, but scenery is a premium. I'll be avoiding the EHPW as well.

Many thanks. Feel free to pm me if you feel sensitive about sharing this info. I'm OK with whacking or unmarked trails as well.

Ledge Pond Accesability

Has anyone been to Ledge Pond in the St Regis Canoe Area recently? I'm wondering if there is enough water in the creek to paddle from Pink Pond up to the start of the carry to Ledge? 3 of us are planning to take our solo canoes up there in the near future.

Understaffing, Underinvestment and Human Errors

Three’s a Crowd: Understaffing, Underinvestment and Human Errors put ICS Security in Key Verticals at Risk

According to Kaspersky Lab’s ‘State of Industrial Cybersecurity 2018’ survey, industrial and energy enterprises, as well as transport and logistics companies, have different opinions regarding the negative effects of cyberattacks on their industrial networks. But, when it comes to the issues affecting their ability to keep networks secure there are three key concerns they can agree on; understaffing, underinvestment by senior management and the human factor. And with almost 40% of ICS computers facing attacks every 6 months, these cybersecurity gaps in critical infrastructure can significantly increase the risks for organizations.

Different fears
Depending on the industry, organizations have different assessments concerning the damage caused to their business by cyberthreats. For transport and logistics companies that build their business based on a service model, the most negative impact is losing customer confidence (75%). But for the majority of manufacturing enterprises (66%) and energy companies (73%), their biggest concern is compromising the quality of production due to a cyberattack.

… same tears
Our research found that despite the frequency and debilitating impact of ICS network attacks, only 52% of companies have dedicated response measures in place to deal with such an incident. This is compared to the protection afforded to corporate networks, which is at a more mature level: the majority (77%) have implemented response measures in the case of incidents affecting corporate IT.
There are several common reasons why this might be the case, which unite industrial organizations as they struggle to keep ICS networks secure.

Under-resourced and under-skilled
The task of protecting industrial networks often falls to those providing corporate information security. In 40% of manufacturing organizations, ICS protection is the responsibility of corporate IT security officers. Within transport and logistics companies, over half of those surveyed (58%) confirm that ICS safety is provided by a dedicated team working full-time to combat threats.
Industrial organizations, especially those with complex technological processes, need highly specialized, qualified employees to fill the gap. For example, in the energy sector, where national critical infrastructure is managed with the help of ICS, the main challenge when it comes to security management (61%) is hiring employees with the relevant skills.

Lack of top management involvement causes underfunding
In many enterprises, IT security is a priority for senior management, but in more than half (54%) of manufacturing companies, top management is little - if at all - involved in ICS protection issues, which results in underinvestment. Indeed, two-thirds (66%) do not have a dedicated budget for providing security of critical infrastructure. And this position remains unchanged, even in the event or risk of an incident, with 17% of manufacturing organizations not considering this a sufficient enough reason to invest in ICS security.

The human factor is an evergreen problem in ICS security
The consequences of employee errors pose a critical threat to half of all organizations in all sectors (49%). This is not surprising, given that after malware and ransomware, it is the most common reason for security incidents in ICS (27%). Fortunately, companies are aware of this problem and are trying to solve it by training personnel and creating rules of behavior on critical infrastructure objects. 82% of organizations have already implemented training for employees, contractors and vendors.
Whatever the most feared consequences for industrial organizations, the only way to prevent or lessen the effect of an attack is to put in place robust safety measures and procedures for ICS networks. Monitoring and timely responses to incidents on industrial networks should become key IT security priorities, along with educating and arming staff on how to minimize the risks to their business.

"Cyberthreats are constantly evolving and targeted attacks, such as the recent Triton and Industroyer, exploit employee weakness. Incidents caused by accidental actions of employees can lead to data leaks and the failure or complete shutdown of production processes. For enterprises, this could lead to huge financial and reputational losses," said Georgy Shebuldaev, Head of Kaspersky Industrial Cybersecurity Business Development. "To stop this from happening, a combination of technical and administrative measures are required, which includes both the training of personnel and implementation of specialized cyberdefense systems for all levels of industrial infrastructure."

Suggestions for first time fishing trip to adk

Hello, thank you all for reading, I am new to forum. I plan on taking the canoe to paddle in/camp/fish somewhere in ADKS this weekend. This will be my first fishing trip up there. Was thinking little tupper lake but haven't found very much info on it. Sounds like lots of largemouth, and some Brookies there but wondered if it had pike or smallmouth. Also open to any suggestions. Would like to be somewhere with no powerboats. I am open to any suggestions on other lakes. Thanks again!

Anybody know what was going on today in the St Huberts area...lots of men in green and a helicopter in the air....thanks

Pike fishing newbie

I got asked to go on a pike fishing trip next month with a friend. His young son is obsessed with catching a big pike (he lost one last year when it got spooked by the landing net).

I’m looking for advice on tackle and tactics as I’ve not fished specifically for pike before. I’ve caught them while bass fishing but those were a fluke. Do you cast and retrieve or drop shot and wait? Is there a method using a float that works similar to ice fishing?

I know mentioning specific bodies of water is taboo here but if anyone is willing to share anything please PM me. I live close to the Sacandaga but that lake is just too big for a one day outing without prior knowledge of the structure. We were thinking of something more North.

Thank you

McKenzie and a bit of confusion

Fantastic day Sunday Aug 19 on McKenzie then Haystack via "the back way" meaning from the Jackrabbit/McK four corners, proceed up JR 12 minutes to the Haystack herd path and head South for 15 more minutes to reach the summit ledge (much better than the 2.6 miles each way on DEC trail from the four corners to Haystack, and back).

So McK has four false summits, then the final and biggest push to the true summit and summit sign. This was a tough slog up 1000' vertical in a half mile. Tougher than a dozen of so 4k peaks!

The confusion - around the fourth false summit, the trail goes down a bit, and turns to go to the summit. Straight ahead there is a fantastic lookout! Back off the lookout the confusion begin. There is a DEC sign that says "trail" and "view". Here's the thing - the trail to the view is clear. The trail to the summit goes down. The trail to the trailhead (four corners) goes up. So....because I headed enthusastically to the view, headed "up" the trail but realized was going back to the car. Same on the return trip. Almost headed down the hill, but remembered that goes to summit.

Pulled out and used (and needed, required) map and compass both times. They don't lie. Neither does the sun position. Seemed so backwards.

If anyone has influence on DEC signage - recommend the signs change from "trail" and "view" to "summit" or "trailhead" and "view."

Again a fantastic, tough, climbs with spectacular views, highly highly recommend!

Hoel to turtle pond

Does anyone know if the culvert between Hoel and Turtle can handle a canoe float-through based on the recent rain? Four weeks ago it was too dry and the scramble up and down the embankment is less than ideal.

Hiking in the High Peaks area

In the last few years, I've tried to avoid the High Peaks/Saranac Lake area for my hikes, due to how crowded it's becoming and how hard it is to find parking... especially given that I'm usually only able to hike on weekends.

Generally, this hasn't been a big deal as there are a ton of great places elsewhere in the Adks to check out. But I'd like to be able to go to the HP area once in a while.

This Friday, I have a rare non-holiday weekday off and wanted to try a hike in the HP area. Looking for any suggestions about ones that might be less crowded. Given my ability, I'm not looking to do a particularly long one. Due to my schedule, I probably won't be able to get to trailhead until 12:00-12:30 depending on where.

Thanks in advance.

Call Police?

The first person to try this wins. I want to know what the cops say when you call.

"Hollingsworth and village Mayor Paul Maroun suggested that if someone encounters a coyote that they call village police, state police or the DEC."

Good Chemistry

Good Chemistry: the Donau Chemie Group partners with Kaspersky Lab to boost its cyber-defenses

Employee errors and incidents have, for a long time, made protection from cyberthreats difficult for businesses. According to Kaspersky Lab’s ICS Survey, a quarter of industrial organizations claim they have had at least one cybersecurity incident over the last 12 months because of employee errors or unintentional actions. To avoid becoming a part of this distressing statistic in the future, the Donau Chemie Group has selected Kaspersky Lab as its trusted cybersecurity partner.

The Donau Chemie Group, which supports brand owners and retail chains with the production of different chemical materials, has always had cybersecurity at the heart of its business processes. However, with its IT infrastructure steadily growing in complexity, the company started to look for a trusted partner, which could not only provide it with an easy-to-manage, integrated cybersecurity platform, but also motivate employees to close the gaps in their cybersecurity knowledge. After piloting several options, the Donau Chemie Group has chosen the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Awareness Platform to provide its employees with cybersecurity education.

The Donau Chemie Group’s priority was to measure the effectiveness of training staff about cybersecurity. Traditional offline education platforms had failed to reinforce technical cybersecurity hygiene skills, and they had not motivated non-IT employees to achieve the desired behavioral changes. Aware of this, the Donau Chemie Group’s IT team hoped that the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Awareness Platform would meet both its education efficiency and success management goals.

The Kaspersky Cybersecurity Awareness Platform allows the IT management team to track the learning progress of their colleagues in real-time. With specific exercises suiting various cybersecurity awareness profiles, all users can take part in training and get the skills they really need. The platform not only delivers knowledge, but also helps staff to develop new behavior patterns. After finishing each learning exercise block - which consists of interactive education and simulation – users receive a bug report, so they can learn from their mistakes. An additional advantage for participants is that they do not need to spend much time on training and can tailor their session schedules according to their needs.
“With the Kaspersky Cybersecurity Awareness Platform, I am sure that all employees at the Donau Chemie Group will get the skills they need to boost their cybersecurity hygiene levels. As we already have a click rate of less than 2% in phishing tests, we can now think about implementing more sophisticated tests – to reach the next level of cybersecurity awareness and improve the skills of our staff,” - says Christian Lang, IT Manager at Donau Chemie.

On top of Security Awareness Platform, targeted to “regular” employees, Donau Chemie uses Kaspersky Lab’s “Cybersecurity for IT Online” training. It is a relatively new product, equipping IT managers, service desk specialists and developers with practical skills on how to recognize a possible attack scenario in an ostensibly benign PC incidents, respond to it and, when necessary, collect evidence for more in-depth investigations.

"With the increasing sophistication of cyberthreats, IT specialists are expected to be cybersecurity savvy by default. They must know how to be the first line of defense for their company, and effectively evade any kind of cyberthreat they may meet at work. Kaspersky Lab, providing specific training programs for different groups of employees, is a trusted cybersecurity partner. It offers easy to configure security solutions, which can be chosen and set to suit the specific requirements of each business. The result is that everyone can feel confident about information security,” comments Vyacheslav Borilin, Security Education Program Manager at Kaspersky Lab.

Improving employees’ cybersecurity awareness is only one layer of defense for businesses to consider. Alongside this, every company needs an integrated corporate, multi-layered cybersecurity platform. To ensure that its IT infrastructure is protected against malware, ransomware, cryptominers and other threats, the Donau Chemie Group has implemented Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business.

Phishing Attacks

Over one third of all phishing attacks target financial sector customers in second quarter of 2018
In the second quarter of 2018, Kaspersky Lab’s anti-phishing technologies prevented over 107 million attempts to visit phishing pages, of which 35.7% were related to financial services and targeting customers through fake banking or payment pages.

The IT sector was the second hardest hit, with 13.83 of attacks targeting tech companies, which is 12.28 percentage points more in comparison with the previous quarter, according to Kaspersky Lab’s ‘Spam and phishing in Q2 2018’ report.

The results above show that to protect their money, users should be extremely cautious about their security when they surf the Internet. Attacks on customers of financial organizations, including banks, payment systems, and e- shop transactions, are an enduring trend in cybercrime and involve the theft of money as well as of personal data.

By creating fake pages of banking, payment or shopping sites, intruders harvest sensitive information from unaware victims – such as their name, password, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, credit card number, and PIN code.

The second quarter of 2018 flustered users of financial services, with 21.1% of attacks featuring banks, 8.17% online shops and 6.43% payment systems – comprising more than one third of attacks overall. Brazil remained the country with the largest share of users attacked by phishers in the second quarter of 2018 (15.51%). This was followed by China (14.44%), Georgia (14.44%), Kirghizstan (13.6%), and Russia (13.27%).

The distribution of different types of financial phishing attacks detected by Kaspersky Lab in Q2 2018

Interestingly, there were almost 60,000 attempts to visit fraudulent web pages featuring popular crypto-currency wallets and exchanges, during the period from April to June. In addition to traditional phishing, which helps to access victim accounts and private key information, cybercriminals try to force their victims to independently transfer crypto-currency to them.

One of the tricks is the free distribution of the crypto-currency. Another trick is for scammers to exploit the names of new ICO projects to raise funds from potential investors. Using these two tricks, according to Kaspersky Lab rather rough estimates, over the past quarter, intruders managed to earn at least $2,329,317, even without taking into account any revenues from classic phishing.

“The permanence of attacks targeting financial organizations reflects the fact that more and more people are using electronic money. Still, not all of them are sufficiently aware of the possible risks. So, intruders are actively trying to steal sensitive information through phishing,” said Nadezhda Demidova, lead web content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

Other key findings in the report include:

Phishing:
● The main targets of phishing attacks have remained the same since the end of last year. They are primarily global Internet portals and the financial sector, including banks, payment services and online stores.

● In comparison with Q1, the share of attacks on financial organizations decreased by 8.22 percentage points and became 35.7%. However, IT companies added 12.28 percentage points. The share of attacks on these companies in Q2 was 13.83%.

Spam:
● In the second quarter of 2018, the amount of spam peaked in May (51%). The average share of spam in the world’s email traffic was 50%, which is 2.16 percentage points lower than the average figure of the last quarter of 2017.

● China became the most popular source of spam, overtaking the U.S. and Germany.

● The country most targeted by malicious mailshots was Germany, once again. Russia came second, followed by the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Italy.

Kaspersky Lab experts advise users to take the following measures to protect themselves from phishing:
● Always check the link address and the sender’s email before clicking anything.

● Before clicking any link, check if the link address shown, and is the same as the actual hyperlink (the real address the link will take you to) – this can be checked by hovering your mouse over the link.

● Only use a secure connection, especially when you visit sensitive websites. As a minimum precaution, do not use unknown or public Wi-Fi without a password protection. For maximum protection, use VPN solutions that encrypt your traffic. And remember: if you are using an insecure connection, cybercriminals can invisibly redirect you to phishing pages.

● Check the HTTPS connection and domain name when you open a webpage. This is especially important when you are using websites which contain sensitive data – such as sites for online banking, online shops, email, social media sites etc.

● Never share your sensitive data, such as logins and passwords, bank card data etc., with a third party. Official companies will never ask for data like this via email.

● Use a reliable security solution with behavior-based anti-phishing technologies, such as Kaspersky Total Security, to detect and block spam and phishing attacks.

Wilcox Wild forest trail question

I saw an interesting annotation on a map for this area -- specifically for the pine orchard trail. It said "Trail 23 is not recommended for groups less than 3 persons" -- I had never seen a warning like that before. Does anyone know why they would go so far as to call this out on a map?

Can anyone identify this fish?

My 12 yo caught this beauty on the lower half of Upper Saranac Lake last weekend. First one of it's kind that we've caught in 7 yrs of fishing there and I'm at a loss. I thought it was a trout or maybe a hybrid trout, but I can't find anything that seems to match. Maybe a whitefish? Dorsal fin is far back on the spine and belly was ultra soft.

New to the forum, thanks for any help.

Hoffman Mt 8/11/2018

Been quite a long while since I've actually written up a trip report. Summer has been busy and many of the trips I've made were ones not worth sharing.... or ones that were too good to share :p Today's trip had me notching off another hundred highest with the side benefit of exploring an area that is new to me.

I hit the Big Pond Trail Head in the Hoffman Wilderness shortly before 8. There was not a single car there so I knew I had the right place. On my way in to Big Pond I noticed some flagging in a couple spots - a quick recon confirmed that a trail crew has been making some progress on some new trails from the UMP. I took a quick break at the campsite at Big Pond for one last map check before wandering into the woods.

Being relatively new to the off trail game, Hoffman Mt was to be the longest bushwhack I've attempted. So I figured the nice ridge line route with its straightforward navigation would be a good approach. The ridge was fairly open the whole way with alternating deciduous and conifers. Many stretches had on and off herd paths or game trails making travel enjoyable at times :D As I neared the summit, I was greeted with copious amounts of Moose scat. Stepping around it became a little bit of a chore at times - but at least there was not a single Charmin Bloom!

The summit came and went with the only views coming from lower down the ridge. A couple light rain showers on the hike out were quite refreshing! With so many places to explore, I'm sure the remaining 32 on my list will take some time.
