McKenzie and a bit of confusion

Fantastic day Sunday Aug 19 on McKenzie then Haystack via "the back way" meaning from the Jackrabbit/McK four corners, proceed up JR 12 minutes to the Haystack herd path and head South for 15 more minutes to reach the summit ledge (much better than the 2.6 miles each way on DEC trail from the four corners to Haystack, and back).

So McK has four false summits, then the final and biggest push to the true summit and summit sign. This was a tough slog up 1000' vertical in a half mile. Tougher than a dozen of so 4k peaks!

The confusion - around the fourth false summit, the trail goes down a bit, and turns to go to the summit. Straight ahead there is a fantastic lookout! Back off the lookout the confusion begin. There is a DEC sign that says "trail" and "view". Here's the thing - the trail to the view is clear. The trail to the summit goes down. The trail to the trailhead (four corners) goes up. So....because I headed enthusastically to the view, headed "up" the trail but realized was going back to the car. Same on the return trip. Almost headed down the hill, but remembered that goes to summit.

Pulled out and used (and needed, required) map and compass both times. They don't lie. Neither does the sun position. Seemed so backwards.

If anyone has influence on DEC signage - recommend the signs change from "trail" and "view" to "summit" or "trailhead" and "view."

Again a fantastic, tough, climbs with spectacular views, highly highly recommend!
