I am leaving for my NPT hike Thursday and I was wondering about cell service on the trail. I am expecting none for the most part, but I will be taking my phone as an MP3 player with a solarmonkey charger that seems to be able to charge it fine from my tests if the conditions are right. Having the thing with me (and not having a Spot or similar device), I figure I may as well bring it out of airplane mode and check in with home if there are spots with service along the way.
So what I am asking is if anyone has experience with successful Verizon service at any landmarks (lean-tos, dams, roads etc) where I could get out a quick message? Thanks! This is a thru hike so anywhere and everywhere is fair game. I will be going into Long Lake for a pickup as well.
