New to Shotokan--Tips and cetera
Hey guys!
This is going to be fairly long, I apologize beforehand. I've definitely got some questions to ask about Shotokan, but just as much I want to express my excitement. I'm 35, have been interested in martial arts for much of my adult life, but haven't had a great deal of success in finding good instruction in Karate. As a teenager I got a "black belt" in a shopping mall school, and basically forgot everything I learned as I went to college and became an adult. For a while I tried another school, and even signed a contract for a few months, where it soon became apparent that the teacher was an abusive jerk who routinely mocked a fellow student with brain damage from a car accident. I decided I could not continue attending there in good conscience, though I was stuck in the contract. When I moved to my current city I started at a boxing gym, which was awesome, did that for a year and a half, switched to Muay Thai, which was also awesome, but never really fell in love with it. Then, last week, I happened upon an SKA club just up the road from me. A little skeptical, I nonetheless went and watched a class. Then I came back and watched a second class taught by the school's senior instructor who is Godan. It was great. I really loved it. Afterwards we talked, the guy struck me as being very genuine and talented, and the terms of the dojo (no contract, reasonable pricing, etc.) was just what I wanted so I signed up.
Now I'm excited, but I do want to start off on the right foot. I've re-learned how to count to ten in Japanese, have begun doing basic stance stuff again just to get my legs used to it, and have been reading all I can find about Shotokan on the web. At some point I'll start purchasing Funakoshi's books. One thing I worry about though is general conditioning. From what I can tell the heavy component of conditioning present in boxing and Muay Thai is less emphasized in Karate so I expect to have to do it myself, and I'll presumably just do the regular jumping rope, body weight and dumbbell exercises, and other calisthenics that I'm already used to. Does this seem fair? Also, I know I'm going to have trouble adapting to the different philosophy of striking. I got so used to to regular boxing stance and boxing blocks that I'm going to have to re-learn every bit of that. Any tips? More importantly, what else can I do, given that I don't even know what I don't know, to best prepare myself to take full advantage of being a white belt beginner with no useful knowledge to speak of? Unfortunately, for at least a few weeks, I won't be able to make every single class each week due to work and personal obligations.
Anyway, thanks!

Certification Issue
Hello - Years ago I was promoted to 1st Dan at my former dojang. I was give a certificate and later went to another Dojang (WTF/Kukkieon certified) and found out my certificate was fraudulant. This was a major blow to me as a 16 year old after working for about 5 years. I felt as if my time was wasted. I understand some may say the association/school should not matter. Howevr, I am against being given something that is not true.
I have gone to ither dojangs in the past but due to work/finances and was either told I can wear my black belt but have to work up to their program...or start over as a white belt, where I skipped belts at promotions. I had instructors recognize I was certainly no white belt at sparring sessions.
I have seen there are guys who have advertised certifying online taekwonwoo and others. I am now in my late 20's and also training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu primarily and work full time. I have lost some flexibility but mentally that stuff never leaves you.
Is something like that worth it? I may sound stupid but I dreamed of being reconized by the Kukkiwon and knowing my dojang's lineage.
Kind Regards,
A confused/disappointed and frustrated student

Trout Pond near Lows
Anyone paddled Trout Pond across the lower dam from the Lows put in? Are there any campsites on that pond? I have often thought of checking it out but the crowded parking lot always deters me.

New Southern Re-Route
Hello,
A friend and I are planning to hike the new southern section of the trail between CGV Rd. and the Benson Rd. Would it be easier to hike it N to S or S to N? Thanks!

Hour pond mountain 7/30/16
From the Thirteenth Lake trail-head, I followed the trail to Peaked mountain pond. Left the trail, and climbed up the north side of Hour Pond mountain. Dropped down to a ledge SE of the summit (elev 2670). Nice view to the south including Bullhead mountain which felt close enough to touch. After a snack, I continued on down to Hour pond and eventually picked up the trail at the lean-to. Followed the trail back to Thirteenth lake. Was cloudy in the morning, but turned out to be a warm, sunny day.

Stable (ankle) flies
Paddled and fished 2 lakes this Am in the southeast Adirondacks and experienced the worst ever of these house fly look-alikes that bite with a vengence. It was a far worse experience than deer flies. Of course in my kayak, I had no socks and water shoes. If I were in a canoe, I might have left but in my kayak, realized I had a spray skirt stored in a hatch. A quick shoreline break and sealed my cockpit up protected my legs....still about 20% of these flies went for elbows and arms but never my head. Their bite is more painful than a deer fly or black fly in my opinion.

Sub Only Tournaments
Have any other MAPPers competed in (or want to compete in) submission only tournaments? I have done two (gonna do a third next month) and honestly it is my preferred rule set when it comes to Jiu Jitsu competitions. When the rule set is sub only, the stallers who try to get wins by doing a single thing and run away, are forced to engage.
It really promotes the finishing aspect of Jiu Jitsu which I believe is the true spirit of the art.

Interesting Approach
Anyone who's ever seen the TV programme Future Weapons will be familiar with "Mack", the ex-Navy SEAL who hosted it. Here he shows his approach for fast results based on the principles of movement, weapons and targets.
I've done vaguely similar things with girlfriends, travel companions etc., when doing just a few drills to up their percentage of being able to handle themselves by a few points in a very limited amount of time - just present a pad to them and get them to hit it, then build a mini martial art for them based on their natural reactions. However, Mack has this patter down and I think it's an interesting approach.
Here is the clean, shorter version:
For a longer, and better, version, that contains bad language, search for "Navy SEAL "MACK." Civilian Navy SEAL BUDS Training" on youtube.
Obviously, and as you can see on the longer video, this is just a first step, and technical refinement can come afterwards. I do think as a way of thinking, and to shift away from the technique-centric approach (movement and weapons in Mack's concept), it has merit.
I believe, in an ideal world, students would first build some muscle memory for optimum movement and weapons, so that targets are attacked with maximum efficiency, but for a fast introduction for a mixed ability group, I think it is a good approach.
Thoughts?

Noah J. Rondeau's former hermitage site
I will soon be hiking the section of the NPT that passes the site of the old hermitage and I just had a quick question. Is the clearing with the sign marking the site right along the current route of the NPT or is there still a spur trail which leads to the spot, as it was in the old days?
I will be hiking southwest and know that if I make it to Ouluska LT I've gone too far, but I'm wondering if I should be keeping an eye out for a spur trail before that point or not. I've seen it described as just a small clearing with a sign along the trail - just wasn't clear if that was still the NP trail.
I'd sure hate to miss it as I've been a bit fascinated with Noah ever since seeing one of his old cabins at the Adirondack Museum as a kid. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing still do for that matter! It's one of the things I am most looking forward to on this trip.
Thanks

Muay Thai Self Training
hi, I know you guys probably get this all the time but could it really be possible to learn muay thai strikes at home alone? maybe with a bag and shadowboxing in front of the mirror? could you copy the very small details in a video and practice them everyday. could you maybe video yourself training and doing the moves and then carefully comparing them to a professional online. I'm already doing arnis so do u guys think that that's enough sparring? training would probably consist of firstly dynamic stretching and then the training and then some static stretching and flexibility training after. would this work?
thanks :)
thanks :)
Drive up Campsites near Little Tupper?
Anyone know of any drive up sites near Little Tupper? I get done with work at Noon on Sunday and would like to drive up camp Sunday night so I can get to Rock Pond at a decent time on Monday and hopefully not have to battle the wind and waves that always come up on LT in the afternoon. I am comiong from Burlington VT so.... Thanks!
Essex Chain
I stayed at 5th Lake in the Essex Chain two weeks ago. Did not realize it was the handicap accessible site. Nice work! -except the outhouse. It was not handicap accessible to someone in a wheelchair. The seat was way to high and someone had had obvious trouble. I brought it up to the DEC. Hope they have taken care of that issue. The site is very nice. Anyway, I had been to the Chain once before and was totally bummed out about the no fire policy. This time the quiet and solitude I found totally made up for it. Only saw one other paddler and they were only there for a day trip. We had the whole chain to ourselves that night! we heard 2-3 planes but otherwise the only man made sounds came from us. Totally worth foregoing the fire.
Quiet swimming/ camping spot
Okay, so I have paddled all over the ADKS, hiking into remote spots with my Hornbeck....but I am having a hard time remembering any good spots for swimming that are remote and quiet. I think of: Lila, Little Tupper, Saranac Lakes, Stillwater... I am wanting less crowded/ less visited ideas. That granite slab in Gooseneck Pond is great, but if it is in the 90's next Monday I would prefer not to bush-wack into my destination. Portaging is fine. It is just that even though my 14" Hornbeck is light I still got heat stroke bush-waking into Goosneck during a heatwave last summer. Pharaoh Lake is sweet, but the portage would be a bit much in hot weather. Anyone have suggestions for me? Thanks!
Peak ID
Can anybody help me with some peak IDs?
The first is a view of the high peaks taken from Indian Lake this June. The location on Indian Lake where the photo was taken is near the south end of Long Island near campsite 33. I labeled the peaks for your easy reference.
Attachment 18172
The second is a view from campsite 23 on Stillwater Reservoir taken last September, looking just a little north of west. The arrow points to the peak that I'm curious about - barely visible through the haze. I've paddled to this part of the reservoir many times and never noticed this before. I'm guessing it is the Seward Mountains, located just south of Ampersand Mountain. Your guess?

50L pack & a bear barrel?
So I am looking at downsizing pack. Bear kegs are required/recommended in ADK.
Do folks:
Thanks.
Do folks:
- Stuff these into pack and pack around it?
- Hang on exterior?
- Pack clothes inside of it so your PJ's smell like bacon?
- Launch it with a trebuchet from trail head and than hike until you find it?
Thanks.
Confidence
Confidence, the all elusive quality that is recommended by all in all things. What is it?
As i work now in a very big institution with thousands of people, the concept of "confidence" became something i became very interested in watching and analyzing (i'm not a psychopath, i'm in IT; similar but not the same)
In MA, many would say that is something that comes with training. Many train to gain it, as a primary goal. Then, i know some that have never had any training and never had any physical conflict in their lives, yet are very confident in their ability to deal with a nasty situation. Call it delusion, maybe, but it's still a form of confidence. In MA i found that some of the best trained or most experienced people that i know, are the least confident; maybe it's a case of knowing how much you don't know.
In work, the same. Confidence seems to have little to nothing to do with how good someone is. Some of the very best are questioning themselves while some of the worst are dead sure on everything they do.
It is IMO unquestionable that it's better to have it, then not. Regardless if it's based on something real or not.
Narcissism seems to be a clear factor for some people to explain their belief in themselves. Training and being good at what you do can bring some level of it. Encouragement and people believing in you is also a factor.
Given that there are not only real world, verifiable factors, in what gives people a feeling of confidence, but also purely delusional ones, the only logical conclusion i have, is that it's purely a way of thinking.
One think i am sure about, is that it's almost always better to have it, then not. Even if you are wrong, people seem to respect "action", even the wrong action, far more then hesitation. Just taking a decision, even the wrong one, seems to in itself build confidence for future decisions.
So, if it helps so much in life, can confidence, even the one based on delusion, be a bad thing? Is it better, more profitable, more advantageous, to be even deluded then knowledgeable but unsure?
What is confidence really? Where do you get it from?

So I'm off to the Lake District tomorrow for a nice family holiday.
Any good suggestions from MAP'ers on what to do?
Got some walking up Barrow Fell and Catbells already planned but thought I'd throw it open for any hidden gems.

Bear attack in Bolton
Been involved with bears/wildlife in the ADK's for all of my life but never heard of a cow attack by a bear. I can only assume this drought is pushing these animals to severe hunger levels if they are attacking these large cows. More than likely cars and camps will be getting broken into if the drought keeps up.

Medicinal Plants
I've found a great deal of interesting medicinal plants in the ADKs, recently blue cohosh, bane berry, bunchberry, Chaga mushrooms, and I've set out ginseng and goldenseal; two of my favorites.
I'm interested in finding out if anyone uses any of the native plants for therapeutic purposes.

Ticks this summer in the Adirondacks
I know this has been brought up in the past, but I'm just looking for an update, especially following the mild winter we had. Anyone seen an increase in ticks inside the blue line?
I'm from Pennsylvania where the problem is widespread and truly disgusting, in my opinion. It can be extremely disheartening to know that the cost of taking my dog for a hike will be at best removing large numbers of ticks from both her and I, and at worst dealing with Lyme disease or one of the other diseases they can carry. I developed the tell-tale "bulls-eye" rash two springs ago, but thankfully caught it soon enough for a long cycle of doxycycline to be effective. I'd rather not tempt fate a second time.
It makes me extremely grateful that, so far, I've always found the Adirondacks to be comparatively devoid of the little monsters. I cross my fingers and toes that it will remain that way.
Have any of you been seeing unusual numbers this summer? If so, in what general areas?

east river trail camping
Hi everyone,
Doing a fairly big hike this weekend of cliff, gray, skylight, Iroquois, and finally allen (yes, culmination of multiple previous failed trips) I made my plan to do the first 4 peaks, but on allen, I'm planning on coming down the east river trail from flowed lands during the day and camping that night and shooting for allen in the morning.
My question is: where are the camping sites along the east river trail(below hanging spear falls)? I heard at once there were two spots, I also heard there was once a lean to in there. I would like to see if there is a spot closer to the intersection to the allen trail as we're heading out on the allen in the morning, and the allen trail back to upper works the following day
thanks!

2 Day 3 Night, Great Range.
My wife and I are planning a trip for September, I've heard the gothics have some of the best views so we're looking to include them and any other peaks in the range. Our last trip to the Seward range we made the mistake of trying to do a big circuit trip while also hitting the peaks, without the proper gear also. I learned quickly the better option is to set up a base camp and do day hikes out of there, and of course an upgrade in our gear and load.
If anyone has any suggestions on the best place to park, set up a camp, what peaks are worthwhile we would greatly appreciate it. Also we are both very fit and can handle doing lengthy day hikes.

Deer flies
So much hype on the dreaded black fly... i think the deer fly is "underappreciated".
Over the last week I bailed on a hike through Pine Orchard, and even a quick jaunt out to G Lake because they were swarming so bad. In both cases, I'd estimate there were 40 or so just waiting for me to get out of the car in their respective parking areas. In the case of G L ake i tried to brave it for the short distance and gave up. Having the truck door open for mere seconds yielded 5 buzzing around on my inside windshield.
I'm not as seasoned as some of the veterans on here, but I've spent quite a bit of time in the park in the last 10 years or so and I've never seen anything like it. Is it the heat?

Something a little bit different: visiting the town of Beaver River
Photos here: http://ift.tt/2akyRW1
Just a quick write up for a trip that I wanted to share. Ever since I was a little kid and I'd heard of a town in the Adirondacks that had no roads to the outside world, and was accessible only by foot or by boat (or snowmobile in the winter), I'd always wanted to visit it. Earlier this summer, I was able to make that wish a reality when I hiked into Beaver River on the Stillwater Reservoir with a friend.
We hiked in via the old trail from Twitchell Lake to the south. Generally, the trail was in good shape and easy to follow, with some moderate ups and downs but nothing too overly difficult. Sections of the trail were a bit brushy but overall we made good time. The 7 or so miles of hiking into the town took us a bit less than 3 hours.
The town of Beaver River itself had a very interesting atmosphere. Most of the camps were fairly rustic, and electricity (and possibly even running water) aren't ubiquitous. Due to the lack of road connection to the outside world, there are numerous cars that have obviously be brought to to the town with no intention of ever being returned to the outside world. We saw a lot of junkers that were un-registered and un-inspected. Many town residents use ATVs or gas powered scooters and bikes to get around. I imagine that year-round residency is pretty rare. My friend remarked that the town "felt like an Alaskan town" on the frontier.
Our destination for the evening was the Norridgewock Lodge, located on Norridgewock Lake. Definitely a nice place to stay. In addition to motel-style rooms they also have cabins you can rent. There is also a restaurant and a bar. The food at the restaurant was amazing, and everything was, I thought, very reasonably priced. (Although apparently it is pretty expensive to come by ferry if you expect to have your car brought with you.)
During our stay, we took advantage of the opportunity to walk west along the old road that used to connect to the outside world, prior to the construction of the Stillwater Reservoir. We visited Colvin Rock, a rock engraved as part of Verplank Colvin's survey of the Totten and Crossfield Purchase. We also checked out the public docks north of the town, and visited Loon Lake to the west of the town. The Stillwater Reservoir looks nice- I've never visited the reservoir before and I would like to come back to paddle it and check out some of the campsites.
The hike out went pretty quickly as well, although we did miss one re-route around a section flooded by beavers. The old trail wasn't actually that bad, and we were able to make it through with dry feet nonetheless.
I highly recommend visiting Beaver River by foot or by canoe for those who are looking for a trip into a remote area that is also a nice alternative to backcountry camping, with actual amenities (being able to shower at our destination after a 7 mile hike in was particularly nice). I would definitely like to return in winter by ski, either via the trail or across the frozen lake.

Giants Washbowl?
Hey guys
Heard some interesting stories about Giant's Washbowl recently. Seems like it's been stoked with brookies for a few years as well.
Anyone care to comment as to the the feasibility of it on the fly? IE like many ponds is it hard to get a decent cast in? Anyone ever fish it?

Powley-Piseco Rd/East Canada Creek
Hey all,
I was thinking about heading up to do an overnight next week, Sunday-Monday, and was wondering about the drive-up sites on Powley-Piseco Rd. I've never seen them, but I would imagine that easily accessible sites would be popular at the height of summer. Can anyone who is familiar with these sites comment on the likelihood of finding an open one on a Sunday afternoon?
Also, I would like to explore that stretch of East Canada Creek by kayak. Anyone know if this is feasable right now, or is the water too low?
Thanks in advance for any info shared!

Gore Mountain via Schaefer Trail
I enjoyed a very pleasant hike up Gore Mountain on July 23. Thanks to Makwa for the excellent trail suggestion. This starts directly above the North Creek town beach, on the access road to the transfer station. The lower part of the trail is very well marked. The only point of potential confusion is mid-way, the trail dumps you out on a ski run with three ways to choose to go. Fairly apparent you need to go uphill, but not marked. After a few minutes on this run, the trail veers off again (marked), staying in the woods until you hit the gravel summit access road. Wonderful weather considering downstate was having a heat wave. Low 70s, low humidity, breezy, good visibility. I saw a few other people down low, after that had the mountain to myself. I agree with Makwa that there is no way the distance is 5.8 miles as marked. I'd believe 4.8. 2:05 up, 1:52 down. Fun day! Only disappointment were the warnings not to climb the tower because of excessive radio signal intensity. But no worries because great views from the ground nearby! Glad I got off before the thunderstorm hit!

1st Time Bushwhack - ETown #4 / Spotted / Grace 7/15-16
About a month ago I went on my first solo overnight hike; RPR and Giant from New Russia with an overnight at Marie Louise. For whatever reason this got me thinking that my first bushwhack hike was in order. Having done a trip of the Dix Range (minus Macomb) from 73/North Fork, I figured a south fork Elizabethtown #4 Spotted Grace would be a good start as Im somewhat familiar with the area.
Got to the small parking area on the south side of 73 around 5:30PM and picked up the obvious herd path at the eastside of the lot. About 2 miles in is a beautiful designated campsite on the eastside of the south fork where it splits. After setting up camp, eating, and hanging food; a storm came through and thoroughly drenched everything, giving me ample time to sit in the tent and plan the following mornings hike. Being new to using a compass/map as my only form of navigation (brought the GPS to track elevation and to help me orient), it was clear that as long as kept the river to my left and kept going uphill Id end up alright. It sounded easy
Woke up early and was on the trail by 6:15AM. With a compass bearing set, I set out into the woods for my 1st bushwhack fairly confident and ready for a little adventure. Like most of my hikes thus far in the Adirondacks, it quickly punched me in the face and humbled me. Ill spare the details, but I made it to Elizabethtown #4 by 8AM. I was beat up, took a break, and thought it would be less thick forest between open rock with beautiful views. I was once again wrong, and the constant dead ends, rock climbing, and thick brush continued to beat me up until I reached Spotted. I took a quick celebratory break there to eat and hydrate, before taking another beating on my way over to SW Spotted. Determined at that point to not let my first bushwhack break me, I powered up to Grace and found my first herd path thus far at 10AM.
I went down the slide after a 30 minute break and I picked up the South Fork herd path and ran into 20 or so hikers over the course of the next mile or two on their way up to Grace. After the trail got a little too far away from the South Fork, I decided to avoid the woods altogether, and rock hop my way down the South Fork and back to my campsite. My happiness to not get beat up by wet tree branches was short lived. The bugs came out, the head net went on, and I slipped/fell 10+ times over the next hour. I was drenched head to toe, but finally made it back to the South Fork split. Still no-one at the campsite, and I took my time hanging out in the river and nursing my wounds. 40 minutes later I was at the car (still the only car in the lot) and on my way into LP.
What I learned on my 1st bushwhack:

What I learned on my 1st bushwhack:
- From now on every trip report I read that nonchalantly mentions I bushwhacked X miles over to will impress me.
- Gloves would have prevented the ridiculous amount of papercut like cuts on my fingers and hands.
- Any clothing outside of a football helmet and pads would probably not have prevented the ridiculous amount of cuts and stab wounds I have.
- Rock hopping for a mile isnt easy. Sometimes large rocks move when you jump on them
- Hours spent moving through wet spruce makes you smell pretty damn good!
- The views from each open rock area are incredible. I could spend hours up there just exploring. It really is an awesome hike that definitely rewards you!

More than a hobby?
I don't know, it started out as a way to get a vehicle for a bargain...but somehow it's turned into something else entirely!
I've always liked Jeeps, been driving one since '86 or '87.
I stumbled on a TJ that was an insurance wreck. Needed a front axle, some steering components and a fender.
Drove it for 2 years, sold it in 2 days for a tidy profit.
Then I found another wrecked Jeep, an LJ, or Unlimited TJ.
This one needed a front axle (surprise!), some steering components, a bumper, a front driveshaft...
4 years so far, and it's still worth twice as much as I have invested in it!
Along the way was this one, fixed and retitled (it was a really nice one!), sold in 2 days for an obscene profit.
While I was inspecting the LJ to bid on it, I stumbled on a wrecked Kawasaki 900...you have to look carefully, damage is nearly non existent.
Rode it for a year or so, until I stumbled upon this wrecked Triumph Bonneville. Once I had the Bonnie, I sold the Kawi for a nice profit.
I'm still riding the Bonnie, it's definitely a keeper. Oh, and it's worth roughly 3 times my investment in it.
Then I picked up this Harley, a soft tail heritage classic, it outweighs me by 650 lbs!!
Here's the before and afters
The Harley will be inspected and retitled in a week or so, it's a very lengthy process, just like all of the others. Someone will get a nice bike, and I will make a small profit (a miscalculation on my part).
And then my son found this wrecked Moto Guzzi, we zipped down to Virginia to pick it up. Damage was limited to the ignition switch! 203 miles on it!!
Here's the two of us heading out for a ride, him on his 2015 V7 Stone Classic, me on my Bonnie. That Guzzi is like a piece of motorized art.
Oh, and he paid 25% of what it is worth.
Which brings me to this month's project...MDB thought she might like this 2011 Volvo S80. Maybe she'll keep it, maybe we'll sell it, dunno yet.
It looks bad, doesn't it? But it's all bolt on parts and paint.
So, you see what's happened...I just can't help myself!
Anyone else have a "hobby" that turned into something entirely different?
I've always liked Jeeps, been driving one since '86 or '87.
I stumbled on a TJ that was an insurance wreck. Needed a front axle, some steering components and a fender.
Drove it for 2 years, sold it in 2 days for a tidy profit.
Then I found another wrecked Jeep, an LJ, or Unlimited TJ.
This one needed a front axle (surprise!), some steering components, a bumper, a front driveshaft...
4 years so far, and it's still worth twice as much as I have invested in it!
Along the way was this one, fixed and retitled (it was a really nice one!), sold in 2 days for an obscene profit.

why is the posting time on messages 20 hours behind?
I have explored my own settings to see why posts always say a time 20 hours prior to when they were posted?
Rabbit hunting
Does anyone hunt rabbits? Are they any good eating? It seems I have a million of them - for the last few years - Lots of coyotes and foxes, and our cat which takes atleast 10 babies per year. The population doesn't seem to go down. Maybe I'll have a new hobby next winter...
Leg Entanglements
For those of you that play the leg lock game in Jiu Jitsu, what are your preferred leg entanglements? I use to prefer ashi garami and 50/50, but for the last year, I've been doing a lot of inside sankaku for the majority of my leg attacks, but also still use ashi garami when it is available.
Walking off a lightning strike...
Not sure of rules on posting links:
Reading up the presidential range as I am heading south for a climb there for labor day (September 5th). A man was hiking around mount washington and was apparently struck by lightning and with aid walked it off...

So this leads me to ask about your most scary/dangerous or injured hike? What did you do? How did you get out?

DNCleak
Okay, not sure how many of you keep up with social media on different platforms, but how many of you are aware of the leaked emails from the DNC and the fallouts since?
Summary for those who don't know:
Wikileaks published nearly 20,000 emails from the DNC (Democratic National Committee). Now a lot of them are silly/trivial ones like this one (that says "I love you too. No homo" https://twitter.com/TheGingerarchy/s...80369366994944).
But there's also some incredibly serious allegations, such as:
1) The Democrats colluding with the media & rigging at least one primary against Bernie Sanders: http://ift.tt/2aoEe6i
Which led to:
2) The Chair of the DNC (implicated in the leaked emails as working to commit election fraud) stepping down from her job...only to be given a job on Hillary's PR campaign: http://ift.tt/2abJtmF
Amusingly enough, this is the reaction she got when she tried to speak earlier today: https://twitter.com/frankthorp/statu...66384532434944
3) The DNC has apologised to Sanders following the email leaks: http://ift.tt/2abJk2o
4) The DNC used rather...unfavourable...terms to refer to different demographics, such as the "taco bowl engagement" for Hispanics http://ift.tt/2abJtTH
5) There's rumours that the DNC planned to reward large donors with Federal titles: http://ift.tt/2aoEoKS
6) There's the suggestion that the DNC were instructed to spread rumours that Sanders supporters were "violent" to try and discredit him: http://ift.tt/2a6Jig2
And one for the conspiracy theorists on MAP - the voter expansion data director of the DNC who was investigating "recent election fraud" turned up murdered. Of course there's already the conclusion he was assassinated, but no known data is available at this time: http://ift.tt/2abJua7
Aaannnd the Observer also happened to run an article basically saying Wikileaks is working in the interests of the Russians to get Trump elected & stop Hillary: http://ift.tt/2aoDZrO
So...yeah, it's been quite the debacle, lately.
Thoughts?

Blue Ridge west and Blue Ridge (ADK in Hoffman range)
I parked on the Blue Ridge Road to approach both of these peaks from the north. Immediately I got thrown into the fire because in order to skirt around private property I had to whack through a bog which was a snarled tangled mess with plenty of foot traps to immerse you into the muck. This took a half hour just to navigate across. Then I had to cross a river, where I probably should have taken off my boots, but I said "screw it" and just trapsed through since it was so hot I didn't mind if my feet were a bit wet.
It took me 3 solid hours to get to the top of the Blue Ridge west peak. Not a bad whack and not too thick, but a lot of elevation gain. The hike begins around 1,000 feet and goes to 3,451' so it was 2,451 of vertical which took some time. But as I said, not too thick and a relatively straight forward bushwhack without too many dense spots.
That whack over to Blue Ridge was overall, very easy. I was astonished to find the ridge fairly open matchstick forest where I made good time getting over to Blue Ridge.
However, on the descent of Blue Ridge is where I discovered why Blue Ridge has its reputation. Descending down to the Aber Brook was dense thick spruce where you could only see a foot in front of you. Slow going and extremely thick to get through. I was so glad to be descending through this as opposed to going upward through it. There were a couple peek-outs on the way down where I was able to get some good photos. I made it back to my truck on the Blue Ridge Road at 7pm. The whole hike for both peaks took 8 hours. Beautiful weather and not terribly hot up there - thank God!
Atop Blue Ridge west peak.

High Peaks looking northwesterly from Blue Ridge
ACHE's (Adirondack Conifer Hell) on the way down Blue Ridge. As thick as it gets!
Photo looking north just before descending into the Aber Book ravine.
I actually created this waterfall. There was a log dam up above it. When I stepped on one of the logs, it cause the log to move and break free the dam. This sent a torrent of water down the brook and over the falls. If this photo had been taken 10 minutes earlier, it would have shown a nearly dry brook!!

Wrist Locks
Since the start of this year, I have been going for and submitting people with wrist locks a lot. I use to disregard wrist locks as something silly and hard to get, but when I started setting them up correctly, they have now become a go to submission.
I usually hit them while my opponent is fighting out of a triangle choke, or I hit them from the sit up on an omoplata.
Does anyone hit wrist locks in rolling?

Chatiemac Cliffs (Gore mtn) 7/24/2016
I parked at the end of Chatiemac road off Route 8 and followed the Second Pond trail. After 3/4 mile, I left the trail and headed for some ledges on the SE shoulder of Gore mountain. It was a tricky area with steep terrain. Found two good view points: one ledge at 2560 ft and another at 2410 ft. (And I am sure there are others.) After finding a way down the lower ledge, I picked up a path (marked with pink flagging) that lead me nearly all the way back to the trail. Next, I continued on the trail to Second Pond before returning.

Mod Aaradia in response to you
I figured on a Martial Arts site, in the movie section... and interview with a well known Martial Artist and movie star would be appreciated. As well as future interviews with others. Of course we wouldn't mind the extra traffic as a result of us sharing our interview with posters. Seems like a fair exchange.

Visible climate impacts on Adirondack Wildlife
Over the past several years, I have seen a change in the flora and fauna in the Adirondacks and I am curious if anyone else has seen the same;
Example: In years past in the northern most sections of the park I almost never saw Opossum, now witnessed via road kill they seem to more common.
Plants along the highway/ roadway seem to be changing. (More specifics later).
Less snowshoe hare sign in the snow and more skunks, gray squirrels etc.
Has anyone seen the same?

Last known Puma/Mountain Lion in NY.
Excerpt from "NYS Forest, Fish and Game Commision Report 1902-1903."
"Dr. C. Hart Merriam, writing in 1886, says that he estimates that nearly 100 Pumas have been killed in the ADK's since 1860. Since 1871 the State of NY has paid bounties for the killing of 99 of these animals. Gerrit S. Miller Jr., writing in 1899, says the animal still exsists in the wilder portions of the ADK's . The last bounty was paid in 1894, for a Puma killed in Herkimer County. This may well be the last of these animals in NY."
I had a Great Great Uncle who killed a Puma in Oneida County before he left to fight and die in WW1. According to my Great Grandmother, He made a hat out of it. So the puma killed in 1894 in Herkimer County, may not have been the last in NY.

Putting together my supplies list for a 1 week trip, mid September, will be just me and my 15 year old son, we already have packs and I just purchased filtered water bottles, any must have recommendations?
I think I've been doing it wrong WRT leg trainig
Those who follow my blog know that I do lots of leg work to supplement ballet/MA practice. I've found though that my progress is very slow when it comes to things like balancing en pointe, echappe releve, etc. It makes my calves scream for mercy. (obviously not nearly as bad as when I started, though :) ) :o How should I adjust my training? Thanks in advance!:hat:
Promoted!
Big day for me today!
I was finally promoted to purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! My journey has been a long and bumpy one but I am so happy that I have finally reached this point. Long story ahead...
I have been a blue belt for quite a few years now. I was originally under Carlson Gracie, and was a wrecker. Submitting people in MMA and winning gold at local Jiu Jitsu tournaments. Back in 2010, my mom got real sick and I had to stop training. I went to college and dealt with the passing of my mom. The desire to train was there, but mentally I was not able to.
Fast forward to 2015, I re-connected with a good friend who owned an MMA/BJJ gym and started training again. After getting back in shape, honing my skills and adding new ones, I started tearing up the local scene again. In the last year, I have taken gold (1st place) in three separate tournaments, fighting 20-40lbs above my weight, and took silver in the last tournament I did, fighting at once again, 30lbs above my weight. All the people I've competed against have been purples (and in one case, a brown belt who I submitted).
Today the UFC event is in Chicago, and I went into the gym to get some rolls with my teammates. Jason Chambers (BJJ black belt, retired MMA fighter and former host of the Human Weapon) was in town for the UFC, and stopped by to watch our team train (he is good friends with my coach). After watching me roll for a straight hour, doing a gauntlet, he surprised me with a purple belt. I was in shock. I had no clue that I was going to be promoted.
I then got to roll with him, and he destroyed me pretty easily lol. But still, I am just so happy. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a huge part of my life and I am excited to finally wrap this purple belt around my waist and compete.
Cheers ya'll!

Plyometric bodyweight routine
Hey,
For anyone who's trawled through the witterings, self aggrandisement and naval gazing that is my training log you'll know I'm currently making some tweaks to my routine. I'm looking to switch up the nature of my roadwork to focus on explosiveness and think my physical training hasn't been helping my MMA training.
I'm looking for a plyometric bodyweight protocol that requires zero equipment which I can perform in the morning before my roadwork. I want to focus on developing explosive strength. A beginner routine would be better as my only strength activities are sparring, grappling and pads right now so my body isn't well conditioned to strength work anymore.
Any recommendations?

Need advice for self defence
Hello everybody.
This is my first posting here and I would like to ask for an opinion.
So, I am generally I very calm person and have never gotten into a fight, or more then 10 years I haven't gotten into a fight and I live in a small town and recently I had an encounter with this guy that tries to bully me in different ways, and so far I have been handling the situation peacefully, but it might happen that he will soon attack me.
I have been going to the gym for a while now and I am training Shotokan Karate for 2 years now. I am 24. I am pretty strong, I do not drink, I do not smoke, I have good reflexes, but I have never gotten into a real fight.
This guy is a bit of a drunk and a smoker and look really week, he mostly has his words and tries to drive fear into me by trying to be dominant and making himself look powerful(althought he really doesn't look that way) He recently also started making images on the internet with my name on it and some bully jokes and statuses on Social Media, he really hates me and he has hate speech like I will wipe the floor with him... really childisish stuff...
So my question is, can you give me any advice if I cannot handle the situation peacefully and if he attacks me?

Hello
Hi,
Well, to be honest I really don't know what to say. There's not much to say about myself. Actually I don't normally do the forum thing. Normally means never. I don't belong to any forums, Facebook or anything else. I recently retired and have some extra time on my hands and have been reading a lot on the internet and somehow stumbled in here. Other than that the only other thing I kind of follow is a blog. Well...maybe two. I'm not sure since one is new so there isn't much there but both seem to follow more or less my type of training preference and philosophy. I don't normally find anyone thinking like I do so I was surprised. Like I said there isn't much to tell about me. I workout and have training in a few things over the years. My main karate style has been Shotokan but kind of an odd ball version. Not sport at all and kind of private. Just a few guys and a donation jar. No competition no point sparring just hard training. We don't worry much about rank and have been training together for many years.
I tend to prefer the full contact stuff (which is why I like where I train now) and have dabbled in a few disciplines to that end. Not much just bits and pieces of boxing, kickboxing, knockdown karate but not competitively. Just kind of knock around and a bit less on the rules side.

I tend to prefer the full contact stuff (which is why I like where I train now) and have dabbled in a few disciplines to that end. Not much just bits and pieces of boxing, kickboxing, knockdown karate but not competitively. Just kind of knock around and a bit less on the rules side.

4 Weeks out from Moose River Plains trip
In 4 weeks my brother and I are headed into the Moose River Plains area for 6-7 days of day hiking and backpacking. We intend to camp somewhere along MRP road and day hike to the many ponds and lakes in the area. I bought the guide book for the West Central Adirondacks and have a real good idea of where I want to explore for day hikes...Mitchell ponds, Icehouse ponds, Beaver lake, Indian lake...but what are some suggestions for a 1-2 night backpacking trip in this area? We are even open to any suggestions in the nearby area. Any other suggestions for guys who are more used to spending time walking thru Florida swamps than NY mountains?? Thanks!
Remote sites
Hi, been to lows many times over the last few years and love it because of its remote location. Any suggestion on similar locations to paddle to that are remote and have great views.
Thanks
Thanks

Jesupp's River Overnight
Finding myself drawn to the NPT as of late. Perhaps it's the "newness" of the trail to me or the fact I can create these perfect, symbolic, iconic fires of the Adirondack woods, that I mostly can't partake in since the overwhelming majority of my hikes have been in the EHP, and of course fires are not allowed.
Left Clifton Park, NY around 8 or so Wednesday and arrived at the Piseco trail head at 10:00 AM. Thoroughly enjoyed the brand new pavement of route 30 from Northville to Wells in my sports car btw, and the view of the Sac along the way certainly is world class scenery.
I was greeted by a cloud of angry, enraged deerflys on a jihad to suck every drop of blood they could from me, however my french foreign legion style hat eliminated their classic attack from behind method.
Just another feet friendly, beautiful black dirt trail for the entire length of this trail sans the occasional rock sections. I bumped my mileage up to 6.6 miles one way this time with a 29# backpack. Was considering just doing the 4.4 to Fall Stream but my legs felt stronger after two trips so far this year. Think I arrived at Jesupp's River around 2 or 3 and pitched my tent, went on a major wood patrol and boiled up some well deserved calories. After dinner I took a leap of faith and submerged my salt encrusted body in the the Jesupp. There is a perfect hole around 4' deep right at the camping spot with a big rock for your towel and fresh clothes so enduring the bone chilling water is minimized.
Was forced to start the fire a bit earlier than I wanted, however the mosquitoes boiled up from the ground in number I have rarely seen and the smoke quickly bushslapped them away.
After a peaceful night's sleep induced by the sounds of water babbling in the river, I quickly ate bfast, packed up, hiked out and was on the road by noon.
Beautiful area and just loved the remoteness and serenity.

Jeff Glover Seminar...In Chicago!
Hey there ya'll!
Just wanted to let ya'll know (who live in the Chicagoland area) that master of deep half and the donkey guard will be doing a seminar at Rio Jiu Jitsu this Sunday at 3pm in Chicago. Jeff will be going over deep half material and some donkey guard.
Last month, I went to an Eddie Cummings seminar at Rio. The school was very nice, and Pete (the head coach/owner) was very polite and welcoming.
If you're in the area, don't miss out. Tickets are on Event Brite for only $55.

Spanish Cup not very difficult but rewarding bad
Today kicked a Spanish Cup, 4 games: 5-2, 5-1, 7-0, 5-2. In addition to feeling relatively strong first opponent, behind very general. The first person action and awareness, 100% D1 players, and may even also snatched the crown, but entirely luck on my side, had 2-2 stalemate state, fifa 17 coins was I scored two long-range, behind to collapse, I am also the first time into the two long-range game.
The middle is not to say, the last one should be the level of D2-D3, also won easily. Overall, this group Cup I very good luck, did not encounter great God, it is still quite lucky.
Castro reward, too hard to use, try the two, much worse than the 84 Gerry Mann, the key is SM only three stars, the ball is also very poor, but for my first look at him TOTS card is estimated to destroy the anger
And so on around next Wednesday, the Benzema, then next week, into Buffon. Finally, a reentry Matuyidi year, call it a day.
Next year no longer rush into a variety of black card, not in fifa 17 xbox one coins One the first week to buy TOTY, directly engage in a flash of gold (C Lo still have to), to save money TOTY out two weeks later received card.
