Murphy Lake via PHR, WLWF, 6 Oct, 2016

Today was an absolutely perfect day for a nostalgic hike into Murphy Lake from Pumpkin Hollow Rd in Wells. This venture into the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest was the first time Tredhed, myself and our friend Jeff had made this hike since 1981. As kids, we had always spent an overnight at the Murphy Lake lean-to and today was the first time since then that the stars aligned for our triumphant return.

The weather and fall foliage did not disappoint us as we hit the beautiful trail (photo 1) for a quick jaunt through the woods. As kids, we always stopped at the Doig Creek bridge for a break. Today was no exception and the reflection of the leaves was superb (photo 2).

A mile short of the lake, we passed this dried out beaver meadow that had some great color as well (photo 3). Just before we came to the lake, we made a short detour to check out some waterfalls (photo 4). This would really be something in the spring time. Today, the trickle of water made us want to come back when there was more water in the outlet stream.

Our arrival at Murphy Lake was surely stunning (photo 5). The fall colors reflecting off the water and the perfect blue sky held us in awe. As we walked towards the lean-to, we stopped for five minutes to watch a family of three otters chase and catch the freshly stocked trout. They looked tasty.

Arriving at the lean-to, we took several hero pictures as well as a few shots of Huckleberry and Sturgis Mts. (photo 6/7). After a nice lunch of hot soup and Italian bread, we basked on the rocks and reminisced about camping trips past, wet sleeping bags and those infamous Murphy Lake leeches.

Sadly, it was soon time to head back to Pumpkin Hollow Rd. We reluctantly left Murphy Lake behind, bidding the otters good luck. We had an enjoyable hike out, telling stories the whole way. Our only hope is that the three of us don't wait another 35 years to hike into Murphy Lake.
