So I've been training JJJ for ~5 months. I've picked up a few minor injuries and that haven't really bothered me, the worst of which was a sprained thumb.
While my goals are mainly fitness & fun, I figure it would be nice to add pressure testing and get some actual skill applying things to resisting opponents.
I've been thinking about swapping this out for Muay Thai for the following reasons:
- They spar (we don't in the JJJ)
- The cost is roughly equivalent (actually cheaper than JJJ + Judo at 2 separate places, if I just train at this one place)
- The Muay Thai place also offers boxing, BJJ & limited Judo (1x/week). They also have an MMA class that runs every weekday. (They have multiple boxing & muay thai classes daily, and their website says the instructors for those are there all day and members can come train those whenever they like.)
- The Muay Thai place seems pretty legit (they field amateur & professional MMA & pure Muay Thai fighters. www.waikru.com). I'm guessing they teach BJJ & Judo pretty well too.
I recently found a Judo club near me and was thinking of joining, but I could just do it at the Muay Thai place instead (and pick up BJJ).
My main concern is that I'm a not-really-in-shape-yet overweight 34 year old (6', 280lbs). Would I be better off (from an injury prevention standpoint) getting in better shape first? I have made big leaps in my cardio ability from when I started the JJJ 5 months ago, but its still not great.
My guess is that I'd be fine just going for it. I'm thinking being overweight & out of shape increases my judo injury risk the most (due to all that weight slamming the mat over and over). I could always stick to BJJ & Muay Thai for a few more months until I'm in better shape, then add that 1x/week judo class.
(My wife is very concerned about injuries... she really didn't want me doing Judo. I basically said too bad I'm doing it anyway, but it got me thinking about this more. I know she will freak out if I start sparring, but such is life.)
