In the wake of the recent incidents in France and Belgium, I agree with Mr. Rogers in the above article when he says British police should be routinely armed.
The Home Office refused earlier calls for all police to be armed because it felt such a move would jeopardise the police's relationship with the public.
However, it feels like we're entering a new era of domestic terrorism with supposedly many jihadists returning to the UK from Syria and Iraq. I think not arming police would put its relationship with the public at risk through a fear that they could not protect us. And as unarmed agents of the state they would make easy targets themselves.
We wouldn't have to change our stance on civilian gun control either.
