March xc tour-visiting,would like rec...

hi, i have a chance to do a first ever visit to the adirondacks in a few weeks this march, with not much notice to plan, probably looking to be there for about 4-5 days.... i am currently getting the nat geo trail maps, and reading on line, but wondering about any recommendations for what i am looking for, in terms of either areas that would be good for my level, and a few safety items.

i want to do some multi-days out (maybe single nighters intersparsed with low cost hotel/hostel), in areas where i can hit some of the lean tos without them being too far apart. my xc ski level is like intermediate. i don't mind breaking in deep trail, and general elevation gain/loss. I prefer to stay away from sections that would involve a lake crossing and/or if there are any trails that have avalanche dangers there? i am not looking to do extreme downhilling, it's above my level + I will be carrying a backpack. i do possibly have someone that can pick me up for point to point options, or loops are ok too.

i am driving from PA, so would lean towards some southern/eastern regions if i could if the ski conditions are good.....

thanks for any input.
