Quehanna Wild Area

The other weekend I did a 9 mile loop through the Quehanna Wild Area, one of my favorite places to hike. I followed the David Lewis, Bellefonte Posse, Kunes Camp, Twister, and Ligament Trails. The trails were easy and explored diverse habitats and forest types, including spruce forests, meadows, and hardwoods. There were streams, big boulders, and hemlock forests. I crossed bog meadows with cotton grass and meadows of ferns turning orange and red. The fall colors were coming in nicely. The highlight may have been the odd ruins of Kunes Camp, located between two massive boulders. The trail went right through the doorways. I also saw some wildlife, including a porcupine and a massive bull elk that was bugling. The call was eerie, haunting as it echoed through the forest. An excellent hike in a beautiful, isolated area.
