On one of the other threads, I saw a brief reference to being lost while bushwhacking.
Many years ago, a friend invited me to his camp to do some beaver pond fishing. The first day out, we hiked for quite a ways to the first pond. Then, we went on to the second pond and finally to the third pond. We caught some nice brook trout and put them back where they belonged.
The next day, we planned to do the same thing. After fishing the first pond for a while, my host decided to move on to the second. I decided to stay for a while.
When you are following a person who knows where they are going, it is sort of like being in the passenger seat in a car. You don't pay much attention to where you are going.
So, when I finally decided to head for pond number two, I thought I knew where I was going, but that really wasn't the case. No map. No compass. No GPS. Before long, I was "lost". That is really scary. I knew I wasn't that many miles from civilization, but where was it?
By dumb luck, I finally came out at the bottom end of pond number three. My friend was at the dam end fly fishing. It was really embarrassing to tell him what had happened. What would I have done if he had decided to hike back to camp?
Anyone else ever been lost.... even for a short time?
