We have discussed this time and again, but I raise the subject because of a situation that arose this week
Before I start I know some of you know who I train with, so I'd ask that you don't name names. There's no need, I have more respect than that and this isn't about individuals.
Some background.
It is the last class of the year tonight and on Tuesday I said to a few of the students in class, "I have a session on Sunday, so if you want an extra workout you're welcome to join in".
I thought no more of it, but yesterday I got a call from my instructor saying he was very upset I didn't agree this with him beforehand and that he didn't allow his students to train elsewhere.
Now there are a few discussion points here.
Was I out of line?
I'm not looking for any kind of justification, but I am interested in your point of view.
Does your instructor allow you to train outside of class with others?
Does your school allow you to train with others?
I'm dead against a school not allowing students to train elsewhere and that stems from my JKD background. That said I can understand a TKD school for example not wanting its students waltzing off and doing MMA.
I disagree with it, but can understand it.
As for me I'm probably going to quit this school.
I'll not be told who I can and can't train with. Although I apologised to my instructor (out of respect for his feelings) it has annoyed me that a school wants to put a restriction on its students.
Lots more to say on this subject, but a few initial thoughts first I think.
