Labor Day I hiked my first high peak. My boyfriend and I stayed at Sharp Bridge DEC campground at campsite #4, which was VERY secluded compared to other sites. We were able to get my car down the very steep/small bumpy hill to get to the site, but I have a honda fit. Many other cars would not fit into it. I could hear some traffic from the highway but it was very distant. No where near as loud as the squirrels screaming in the morning. We encountered a red lizard and a hummingbird at our site.
We arrived at the trailhead to Pitchoff/Cascade at around 8:00am, and I was surprised to find parking. I heard it was a very popular hike.
I have various physical issues that make activity and stamina a challenge, so hiking this mountain was a serious accomplishment to me. The trail was rocky but well maintained. There were a few small scrambles. The false summit .5 miles from the top was a nice stop and provided mental energy to finish the hike. I loved feeling the air get thinner and the watching the trees get smaller. It took 2 hours up and 1.25 down.
That night and the next day we visited Chapel Pond for some wading and kayaking. This is a MUST for anyone in the area. I've heard there was rustic camping nearby but I couldn't find it.
We also took a drive down Adirondack Loj road for views and to check out the lodge. It seemed wonderful.
On labor day, we were packing up at around 10:30am. We saw the ranger, Tim, doing some rounds but he didn't talk to us. At 11:15am he came back screaming that it was closing day and we needed to be out at 11:00am. I had forgot 11 was the checkout, but did not know it was closing day. I thought he was joking at first, it was so sudden and he had been so nice before. He screamed that it was his day off and we had to be out of there in 2 minutes. I spoke to some other campers after leaving, they said he did the same thing - drove up near them but didn't talk to them before 11, and then stopped back to scream at them after 11. It seemed like he was planning on screaming at us and enjoyed it. He had a friend in the passenger seat laughing. Crappy little ding but overall a great trip.:)
