Fishing Questions From Adirondack Newbie

Hi all,

I've been enjoying reading the posts on the forum for many months in preparation for my first trip to the Adirondacks (original trip scheduled for Spring was derailed by broken arm). My wife and I are heading to the Saranac Lake area in two weeks for some hiking, fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing. Most of our fishing will likely be for warm water species on the larger lakes, but we were hoping to combine some hiking and exploring with some brookie fishing. I have two general questions, and I'd welcome any insight.

(1) We are thinking about exploring the woods and ponds in the St. Regis Canoe Area or the Wild Forest nearby. I'm not asking for info about any specific ponds, of course, but rather generally, what sorts of hiking conditions should we expect in those regions? I have a good hiking map, but should we simply expect to try to follow canoe carry trails and, to the extent there is a pond nearby, hoof it through the woods? Or is a canoe really the only way to explore the various ponds other than those right near the roads?

(2) And more generally, is it worth bringing some basic spincasting setups along? Should we expect there to be any access for shore fishing in those ponds (again, I'm asking generally)? And even if there is access, is there any chance of success from the shore around that time of year (mid-Sept.), or is it probably still going to be too warm?

Thanks for any insights. We promise that, if we are lucky enough to catch anything, it'll be just a quick photo and then back in the pond!
