Today was another installment of the "Lunch at a Lake" series of hikes with my youngest daughter. We decided to strike out for Bennett Lake in the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest. This was her first time visiting this beautiful little pond nestled in the southern fringes of the Park. I've been here many times and each time I see something new or in a different way that makes me appreciate the simple things in life.
We got a surprisingly early start this morning, considering the usual teenage requirement to sleep late on a weekend and soon arrived at the trailhead (photo 1). Seven cars lined Creek Rd. as we jockeyed for a place to park . Figuring most were bear hunters or fisherman, we signed into the register and hit the trail.
The trail was very dry and in pretty good shape as we headed up the hill from the parking area. After a short while, we met six year old Davina and her mom and dad as they were headed back down the trail. They had been out for a short walk on this beautiful fall day as well. What a great idea! :)
Another quarter of a mile down the trail we met a bear hunter who showed us a photo of a track he had seen a few hours previous. It was huge! Undaunted, we soon passed the abandoned farm fields at the top of the hill and the old paint mine; arriving at the spur trail to Bennett Lake (photo 2). The short walk down to the lake brought us to our lunch spot complete with nice views of the changing colors on the hills across the pond (photos 3/4).
After a nice lunch of chicken sandwiches, we did a little moussing around and soon headed back to Creek Rd. On the way up the spur trail, we met two women who were walking down to the lake to enjoy a beautiful afternoon. It was a short 1.2 mile hike to the lake shore and that fit in just fine with our busy Saturday schedule. Anytime I can get to hike with my kids is time well spent.
