Fall is FINALLY here!

UpstateDave and I just did a quick 3 day exploratory mission to two ponds. Thursday was warm and surface temperatures were marginal (67). Dave hooked up once and had another strike. I blanked. Not a bump to be had. Large brookies were rocketing up off the bottom, boiling at the surface and heading straight back down again. We concluded it wasn't feeding behavior.

Pond #2 was a whole different story. It was cloudy and gray all day Friday. The surface temp was 66 on Friday, dropping to 64 on Saturday. The brookies were happy and we caught lots in the 16" to 18" range, all in nice condition. See the pic, which is representative.

BTW, I'm resolved to take fewer fish pictures this year and to release most without removing them from the water, especially while the water is on the warm side.

Speaking of, I was out a week ago to two ponds that turn out rotund brookies. In both I found brookies with broad backs but no girth. An email to my favorite DEC biologist confirmed that water temps and thermocline depths are more typical of mid-August than September. Concerning.
