MacNaughton Mountain

We climbed this peak last week so my friend could be a 47er. The trail to Wallface Ponds is pretty dry this summer. The upper part of the mountain was extremely buggy. The main Wallface Pond is extremely beautiful. Its stark solitude is inspiring. I remember it well from my last trip here 40 years ago.

I am not surprised a herd path is developing - marked by plastic ribbons. The route was not what I expected. At the start it heads in a more westerly direction than I anticipated. Fallen trees make it a challenge to follow in the first 1/3 of a mile. Once on the mountain, it is easy to follow. The route of the path as shown in the scan is approximate. Please do not rely on it for precision.

Now knowing where the path was, we lost it after 100 yards and bushwhacked. We aimed at the eastern end of the summit ridge on a 230 bearing. We did not encounter blowdown patches, and the bush was easy to push through. The climb was about 90 minutes from the pond, including 10 minutes of looking for the path and 10 minutes walking along the ridge. The descent was less than an hour.

The photos are:

3. south corner of Wallface Pond (where the path begins)
4. bushwhacking up
5. resting on the climb
6. herd path on the descent
7. misspelled name at top
