Greenland Pond, LGWF, 16 Sep, 2016

After a three month hiatus from posting trip reports, I'm finally back in business...for a little while. Today, Tredhed and I had the opportunity to do a long planned hike to Greenland Pond in the Lake George Wild Forest. We'd been planning this hike as a tribute to our late father who, during our teenage years, would always spend his summers in Greenland with the National Guard. Today's hike was not the same as the ice cap and tundra, but as close as we're going to get.

Arriving at the Dacy Clearing trailhead at 8:30, we quickly set out up the rocky trail (photo 1) for Bumps Pond. While climbing the shoulder of Sleeping Beauty, we had a great view of Lake George through the trees (photo 2). After a short hike and a climb of 700', we took a break at Bumps Pond and admired the view of the backside of Sleeping Beauty reflected in the pond (photo 3).

The next short segment was a straight shot to the south end of Fishbrook Pond. While checking out the well used southern lean-to, we noticed the Weather Rock someone had installed (photo 4). This brought back great memories of Scouts when the Weather Rock was always a solid feature of Camp Boyhaven.

Working our way around the Fishbrook Pond, we came to the north lean-to and were immediately impressed by the view of Erabus Mt. (photo 5). The lean-to was well sited and didn't seem as "loved" as the south lean-to. The ledge looked like it would be a good place for swimming. :)

After a short snack at the north lean-to, we headed down the trail to Greenland Pond. While there were several areas of blowdown (photo 6), the one-mile trail was easy to follow thanks to the bright red disks that were recently placed there. Soon, we arrived on the shores of Greenland Pond and immediately admired the beautiful view (photo 7).

After a great lunch of hot soup and fresh Italian bread at the lean-to (photo 8), we worked out way back down the trail. Since we were feeling good, we decided to take a detour up to the top of Sleeping Beauty to check out the old burn area (photo 9) and see the sights.

While we didn't see a soul since we stepped into the woods six hours earlier, the top of Sleeping Beauty was crawling with people. It wasn't a big deal as we expected it and everyone seemed very nice and respectful of everyone else; pretty rare today. People or not, the views were still very cool (photo 10) and a perfect end to a great day in the woods to check out a cool place that has a special meaning for us.

Thanks to Tredhed for spending the day with me and sharing some of the pictures.
