This was my first hike back after finally getting rid of Lyme disease and all its trappings. So having not hiked or exercised in a month and a half I figured I would do an easier hike to test everything out so I chose to do Scarface which looked like a pretty decent hike, not over the top, and it would knock another one off my 6er list. I arrived early in the day and was a bit unsettled when I saw it was right down the street from the correctional facility. Immediately I hear hounds barking and shortly after a helicopter. I was hoping that there wasnt a jailbreak because I left my bear spray at home. So I signed in and headed out. The first part of the trail was very dry and easy going. When I got to the bridge I discovered that there was a bench erected in honor of Captain Paul John McKay who apparently died on the mountain in 2014. Details can be found here: http://ift.tt/2c87Ghe
I crossed the bridge and headed up the trail. I came across an old house foundation which I knew from reading online was there but it kind of creeped me out. I come around the corner, look up, and there is the foundation, also a kids bike with no tires or seat, a hibachi, and a milk jug. I think it was the bike that really set off the creepiness of the whole thing. So I just moved onward and upward. The pine forest finally gave way to hardwoods as I started climbing up. I met two guys who had passed me a little while before. They indicated that the trail only led to a lookout point and that the trail up was back a little way. After trading some stories we moved on back to the rock scramble that we needed to make in order to proceed. The area is one large rock face at a grade with nothing to really grab onto other that some roots which I am always leery of. After this I came to the only good view on the whole mountain and then moved on a short distance to the summit. And by summit I mean a rock surrounded by woods with a disc that says Scarface Mountain on it. Kind of anticlimactic but I knew going in that it was a no view summit. After a short break I headed back down and ran into a few other folks on their way up. After a quick trail condition report that they wanted I bid them adieu and headed back out to the car. Just a hair over 9 miles despite what the signs say and I was feeling pretty good. Glad to be back in the woods after my impromptu hiatus. As always the link below will take you to the pictures of today's hike!
