I reached the land start of my bushwack before dawn. With headlamp, map and compass I established my bearings and set off, knowing that a) I'd soon have light and b) I'd soon reach a landscape feature that really couldn't be missed. I was travelling towards a gully that would guide me to my destination.
In ten minutes time I came upon features that couldn't possibly be - a swamp where there should be none. I checked my compass bearing and map and happened to notice a swamp 180 degrees from my direction of travel. Hmmm. For the first time ever I got out my phone and checked its compass. It read ~160 degrees differently from my Suunto MCA. Double Hmmm.
I reversed course and easily found my destination using the phone's compass. That night I confirmed the failure.
My compass is thirty years old and owes me nothing. When I called Suunto product support to see if this was a repairable condition they said they'd be happy to send me a new one free of charge. That is what I call standing behind a product!!!
