South Central Adirondacks

Ahem.

Quote:

Wild River Press is pleased to announce the publication of the fourth edition of Discover the South Central Adirondacks, the popular guidebook that hikers have been relying upon since 1986.

This book describes the Siamese Ponds Wilderness in its entirety, from Speculator to Indian Lake to North Creek — as well as adjoining areas such as the Speculator Tree Farm, the Indian Lake Islands Campground, and Gore Mountain. This is the fourth largest protected wilderness in New York State, and one that is fun to explore in all four seasons. The area contains numerous state trails suitable for hiking, skiing, and multi-day backpacking — as well as unofficial trails for the explorers who prefer off-the-beaten-path adventures. Do you enjoy bushwhacking to a scenic vista? Paddling a secluded pond? Hiking to a little-known waterfall? It’s all here!

Although this is the fourth edition, it is essentially a new book in many ways, since it bears only a modest resemblance to the previous editions. This is not simply the same material with a new cover. Much of it was rewritten and restructured to better characterize this large and interesting section of the Adirondack Park. All of the trails have been measured by GPS to enhance the accuracy of the trail descriptions, and the page maps have been completely redesigned to make them attractive and easier to read.

But in addition to being a useful trip-planning tool, we are hoping that people will find that the new edition has an “armchair value” — that some of it will be interesting to read even when you’re nowhere near the woods. One of the hallmarks of the Discover the Adirondacks series is the inclusion of historical backgrounds for many areas, and while preparing this book a wealth of new information was found. People traveling the trails of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness will appreciate learning how today’s trails were often major travel routes in previous centuries, as well as who actually lived and worked at the old settlements scattered across the woods. In this new edition you will learn about the history of Old Farm Clearing, Little Canada, Griffin, Foxlair, Harvey Mountain, and other sites.

The Discover the Adirondacks series can trace its origins back to 1974, when the late Barbara McMartin penned her first guidebook for the southern Adirondacks. In the 1980s she grew the series to cover the entire Adirondack Park. After her passing in 2005, I took over the editorial reins and have been keeping the books updated ever since.

These are detailed guidebooks that cover all of the routes within a given region, from the official state-maintained trails to informal routes not covered by most other guidebooks. They are intended to be the authoritative handbook for all people with a desire to explore and become acquainted with a particular region, such as camp owners, local residents, and frequent Adirondack backcountry explorers. Because these books cover all of the routes on public lands, there is something for all skill levels, from short climbs to multi-day treks.
