Using aikido principles in karate

I've been training karate for a couple of years now. Before that ( actually long before that) I trained in a different style of karate, but karate nonetheless. Lots of emphasis on direct lines of attack, and good range with extensive use of kicks.

More recently I've started training in aikido. Aikido is all about circles and spirals I'm told, and that's pretty much what I've seen so far.

In sparring at karate we have very strict rules that would forbid me from trapping and twisting my opponents limbs. But one thing I'd like to carry across is the movement from aikido.

Aikido teaches us to move into the attack, merge with it, and then gently redirect the attacker's own force to our advantage.

Trouble is, and I know this is down to lack of experience, but I can't seem to make it work. Karate teaches movement too, only in karate any movement is often backed by a strong guard and a vast array of accompanying strikes.

So I guess what I'm looking for is any tips on fusing aikido with a harder style like karate.
