BASF celebrates 25 years of creating chemistry in Malaysia with innovation showcase

Celebrating a 25-year history in Malaysia, and preparing for its global 150th anniversary, BASF has launched an innovation showcase in Petaling Jaya. The event, entitled “Building a Sustainable Future”, was officiated by YB Dato’ Lee Chee Leong, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Malaysia, and attended by more than 500 BASF business partners and employees.



BASF first entered Malaysia in 1989 with an office selling textile auxiliaries and printing inks and established its first production sitein Pasir Gudang Malaysia in 1992. Today, Malaysia plays a regional role for BASF including a world scale joint venture Verbund site, local production, and a service center for the Asia Pacific region.



“Over the past 25 years, BASF has made positive contributions to Malaysia as a whole. The company’s strategic partnership with PETRONAS is a perfect collaboration example in leveraging respective strengths of two sizeable companies and has proven to be highly beneficial to the country,” said Dato’ Lee Chee Leong.



“BASF is going to turn 150 in 2015. With our 150 years of innovation capability, know-how and strong global network, we enable our customers around the world to meet the current and future needs of society and become more successful,” said Mr Dean Draper, Managing Director, ASEAN Sub-region, BASF South East Asia Pte Ltd. “ASEAN in particular is experiencing rapid, exciting economic development and we hope to tap into the growth potential together with Malaysia through closer collaboration.”



At the event, BASF introduced a range of solutions that will help Malaysia meet its sustainability goals in a variety of industries including automotive, construction chemicals, crop protection, coatings, oil & gas, consumer products and nutrition & health.



Mr Daniel Loh, the Managing Director, BASF (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, said, “As a long term partner of Malaysia, we play a part in contributing to Malaysian government’s goal in reducing carbon footprint, for example by constantly working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our production concept and continuing to develop energy and resource efficient products.”



His Excellency Holger Wilfried Michael, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany also shared his view at the event on how Germany, as a pioneer has developed a strong environmental framework and ambitious environmental policies during the last few decades.
