Found a headlamp laying around the trail junction just near JBL, where the trail splits from Slant Rock and the Marcy trail (If I recall correctly). Knowing how things lay around for weeks before anyone picks them up, being the victim of lost equipment returned two months later, I decided to pick it up and post on the forum and hope for the best. PM me here or at the ADKHPforum if you think its yours, with the brand and color.

Long Weekend High Peaks Alternative
So I'm Canadian eh. I planned a trip for this coming weekend not realizing it is the long weekend there. Our long weekend is July 1st.
Were planning to stay in the avalanche lake area and do the wright, aglonquin loop and marcy, etc.
How busy will it be?
If it is going to be a zoo... can anyone suggest a similar itinerary (great mountain top views, beautiful hiking, maybe even water to jump in) that would not be over run with fellow hikers. I'm willing to sacrifice some elevation for solitude. I'm coming from vertically challenged Ontario so everything looks like a high peak to me anyway.
Thanks.

Haystack, Basin, Saddleback (FOUND: Headlamp): June 28th, 2014
We found a headlamp laying on the ground near the sign marking the junction to the Marcy Trail from the Slant Rock trail, outside JBL. If this is yours, PM me with the type of headlamp and color. I'll check it here and on ADKHighPeaksForum over the next few weeks.
The vaguely uphill trail to Slant Rock was in fair condition, some mud of course. The rest of the trails had lots of water on occasions, just a little to make all the rocks and slabs wet.
There really isn't that much else to say. Haystack was incredible, one of my favorite mountains so far in the 46'ers, up there with Rocky Peak Ridge and Algonquin. The views were expected from a few previous trail reports, but did not cease to be awe-inspiring. Basin was a little rough. Saddleback's cliffs were a little bit of an adrenaline rush.
Photos (taken with my Motorola smartphone):
Ascending Haystack
Alpine meadows and a mysterious type of flower...
Marcy and Panther Gorge
Haystack, Skylight and Marcy from Basin
Saddleback, the lower Great Range, and Giant in the distance
On the Saddleback Cliffs
A deer just a few minutes away from the trailhead

Planning trip to Stillwater Reservoir
Hi! I'm planning a trip to Stillwater for this coming weekend (7/3-7/6), for a friend and I. I've done quite a bit of research online, reserved a canoe, spoke to the ranger there (he was confident that there would be available sites if we get there on the 3rd), etc., but could really use some specific advice for that area.
For instance, what are the more preferable sites? Reading through the posts here, it looks like #1, 8, 11, 12 are pretty good?
How about recommended hiking/climbing/paddling spots? I know there are tons of trails and inlets, and I'm sure we'd be fine just randomly exploring, but if there are any "must-see" locations, I'd really appreciate hearing about them.
Finally, any other tips for Stillwater, or the Adirondacks in general (I haven't been since I was a kid) would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!

Help - Ushiro Mawashigeri - Turning Hooked Round Kick
Just wondering how different Karateka perform this.
Im currently a 6th Kyu going for a 5th Kyu in Wado Ryu and really struggling with the turning/spinning kicks.
They are just being introduced to us at this level and are being taught by breaking down the movements.
We're being taught as follows:
From Hidari Hamnae Gamae stance >
Left foot across in line with the back foot whilst changing guard to face opposite direction >
Turning completely around to face the front while lifting the back knee, once you can see your opponent flicking the kick around, hooking to the body.
I find the kick really difficult and will 90% of the time end up landing off balance, with my hands flailing all over the place due to this.
Has anyone got any tips for performing this technique?
Cheers, jon

Looking for somewhere to camp near Marcy Dam
Hello; first post here!
So here's the deal, my friends and I are going to see Phish in Saratoga on Friday and we want to hike Phelps and Tabletop on Saturday. Currently our plan is to get as close to Marcy Dam as we can on Friday night and find a campground or somewhere to set up a tent and then tackle the two peaks Saturday, spend the night, leave Sunday.
I have a few concerns; I have no idea where to camp Friday night and the closer it gets the more I am considering an air-mattress in the car. I'm also a little worried about getting a lean-to as I have heard it is a very popular area and it will be fourth of July weekend. Will we have a decent chance of snagging one bright and early on Saturday? Can anyone suggest a good place to camp - keeping in mind that we will be driving there late after a concert and will want to do as little work as possible.
Thanks for reading!
EDIT: I just thought of something else - are there firepits near the lean-to(s)? We are planning our meals and it would be nice to know :P

Lost camera Powley-Piseco Road
I have a feeling I left my camera on the roof of my car and drove off. It's a black Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot camera. It would be on Powley-Piseco road near the Clockmill Pond trailhead (I doubt it lasted far on the roof of my car while I was driving back to route 10)
There's a small posibility it's somewhere in my gear or car but I pretty much took everything apart and haven't been able to find it. If you find it please send me a PM or email me at cuterocky1 at gmail.com. Thanks!

Hello.....again
Hi
I realised that according to the stats my last visit before today was 7th Jan 2009!! So, I am a returning member rather than a new one. But I still wanted to say hi.
Back in 2009 I had been studying Wing Chun then due to a hectic work schedule it became impossible for me to get to any classes. I'm now looking to return, get fitter, and enjoy MA again.
Best wishes

Windsor Brokers - Short Term Technical Analysis for Majors (07:45 GMT)
EURUSD
The Euro returned to the positive tone, closing for the week at the weekly high and starting the new week in the same attitude. As the price cracks the previous peak, with linear regression line being broken, scope is seen for final push through 200SMA at 1.3669 and completion of 1.3676/1.3511 descend, break above which to confirm base at 1.35 zone and trigger stronger correction of larger 1.3990/1.3502 bear-leg. Bullish near-term studies support the notion, with bull-trendline, drawn off 1.3511, offering initial support at 1.3630, ahead of 1.3600, round figure / Fibonacci 38.2% and higher base / 50% of current rally / linear regression channel support at 1.3580, above which corrective actions should find support.
Res: 1.3652; 1.3676; 1.3700; 1.3730

GBPUSD
Cable maintain overall positive tone and trades near recent peak at 1.7061, in a consolidative action, which is expected to precede fresh rally. Studies are positively aligned and support further upside, however, further hesitation ahead of final push higher cannot be ruled out, as daily studies are extended. Break above 1.7061 to open psychological 1.7100 barrier, with 1.7331, 50% retracement of larger 2.1161/1.3501, 2007/2009 descend, expected to come in near-term focus. Psychological level and higher low at 1.7000, offers initial support, ahead of recent range floor at 1.6950, where the downside attempts should be ideally contained.

USDJPY
The pair remains under pressure and continues to travel south after losing near-term bases at 101.80/70 and 101.59, 12 June low/ 200SMA support. Probe below 101.41, 29 May higher low marked full retracement of 101.41/ 102.78 upleg with bearish resumption expected to open psychological 101 support and short-term range floor levels at 101.81/74 for retest. Negative studies on lower and larger timeframes support the notion for final push lower and break below multi-month congestion. Previous supports at 101.59/80 zone, now offer immediate barriers, ahead of lower tops at 102.15/18, which are expected to cap stronger corrective attempts.

AUDUSD
The pair hovers near fresh high at 0.9443, on recovery rally from 0.9350 higher base / trendline support, but still unable to clear barrier. Further consolidation is seen likely, as fresh easing weakens hourly studies, before bulls re-assert for eventual push higher and break above near-term congestion, for resumption of larger uptrend, towards 0.9500, initial barrier. Pullback below psychological / Fibonacci 38.2% retracement of 0.9352/0.9439 upleg, confirms scenario, however, dips should be contained above 0.9352, range bottom, to avoid deeper pullback and introduce bears into near-term picture.

Rookie looking for places like Indian Lake (secluded/private)
Hi! I've browsed through a bunch of these threads looking for some suggestions. I absolutely love Indian Lake. They have some great secluded/private campsites and that's what I'm looking for. I'm also looking for a place that's on the water. Lewey lake is beautiful, but I feel that the sites are too close to each other and don't offer that much privacy. It's difficult for me to find a campground that has what I'm looking for because I'm not sure how close the sites are to each other based on campground maps. Anyone have any suggestions for a new place for me to camp? I'm trying to find something that is at most 2 hours from Clifton Park/Saratoga area. I looked at Moose River Plains, the campsites look really nice but, is that on or near a body of water?Thank you in advance!!
GAIA GPS iPhone App for NPT
I was recently mapping my route using this app and just had over 1000 unique pay points lost after painstakingly hand placing them on the digital topo map.
Is there a way, for those who have used this app, for me to download the waypoints and use the app as I hike? I will of course be bringing the standard map and compass to navigate.
Another suitable option might be for anyone who has used a GPS or location beacon to send me the XML file?
Or any general thoughts would be appreciated.

Kennyetto Creek
How many times have we driven over this and said "We should try this out"?
Well, today was the day...our plan was to paddle the Kunjamuck, but we decided to look at the Kennetto. Well, looking turned into paddling.
We first put in at the 2nd Rt 30 crossing, and paddled downstream to Sacandaga Reservoir. All flat water with a healthy current.
When we got to the Res., there was jetski action on the water and ATV action at the gravel pit that was just out of sight (but within earshot!).
After paddling back upstream to our put in, we went a little more upstream past some little quick water and riffles. We went as far as we could against the ever quickening current, then back to the car.
Once back in the car, we decided to "look" at the next upstream section, at the 1st Rt 30 crossing. We looked for a suitable way to reach the creek, and spoke to a dude mowing his lawn. Turns out the dude was Sean, owner of Sean Michaels Hair Salon...he said sure, we could put in there and leave our car too!! And so we paddled the next section.
More riffles, deadfalls (only one that blocked), and some

Lighter on my feet
Good evening all,
Has anyone got any exercises/drills etc that you have had success with in regards to making you lighter on your feet. The biggest problem for me when sparring seems to be my agility, I can throw strong quick punches/kicks but I am planted to the floor when doing so, therefore as often is tradition on thai boxing I get struck back straight away (as the the opponent wants to score back) often preventing me from landing any succession of shots. I believe being more agile would allow me to hit and move, and use lighter shots to get into a position where I can plant and dig in.
Anyone have any advice?

"Martial arts has changed more in the last 20 years than the 2000 years before it"
In another thread, Chadderz mentioned the above quote. It seems like an interesting topic. Bluntly, I think the expressed opinion is wrong. I don't have the time tonight to write a proper reply, but I wanted to put something down for the sake of (hopefully) starting some discussion.
To begin with, I'd say it's a comment mostly driven by ignorance of history. If you don't accept a division between martial arts and military tactics and methods (which is really a very late concept), it's manifestly wrong. Even accepting that separation, it's easy to find examples of martial arts that have changed dramatically. For example, in my school we practice sword techniques for both armoured and unarmored combat. They are vastly different. Motion, body posture, power application, range, tactics -- there is almost nothing that remains unchanged when going between the two. Historically, the transition from armoured to unarmored styles of techniques happened very rapidly, in the first couple of decades of the Tokugawa period.
There's two points that come out of this for me. One Fusen touched on:
Rapid changes in martial arts happen when you have rapid changes in circumstances. Pre-Tokugawa, if you were a young badass who wanted to make a reputation, you needed to take heads on the battlefield. Post-Tokugawa, those skills were useless, because reputation came from winning duels. Those duels weren't fought in armour, and if you failed to accommodate that reality into your techniques, then no (good) reputation for you. Similarly, MMA is driven by UFC and its successors.
The other point is that everything seems much more significant when it happens to you. The changes between armoured and unarmored kenjutsu are huge to me, because I train them. To an outside perspective? Almost certainly not so much. So the question is: two hundred years from now, when it's the Pan-Galactic Supreme Lightsaber Tournaments where badasses try to make their reputations, are you really sure that people will be able to tell the difference between Chuck Norris and Joe Rogan?

Anyone else think the bugs this year are worse than years past? I cant go outside in the evenings without be swarmed with black flies, and the mosquitoes are really really bad too.:banghead:
Golden Boy Promotions - What's happening?
Over the last month I've been too busy moving house to keep up with much of anything.
So I decided to glance over 'alerts' before I deleted them. Couldn't help but notice the flurry of reports indicating Oscar De LaHoya's flagship Goldenboy Promotions is in for a rough ride with the departures of Richard Schaefer, Floyd Mayweather, Benard Hopkins (it would seem) and others.
This will surely shake things up a great deal. Anyone have the lowdown on what's been happening?

Low's Lower Dam to Little Tupper
How long has it taken others to paddle from the put in at Low's lower dam, Paddle down the Bog River heading east, carry as needed to Round Lake, and then paddle into Little Tupper lake?

Anyone know anything about what it is like to head upstream on the Round Lake Outlet? I found one other thread that seemed to follow this route: http://ift.tt/1nSOKiS But the upstream bit on Round Lake Outlet was not really discussed.

Hello From Eastern Wa
Hello all,
I just thought id introduce myself and give a brief history of my martial art training.
I've been studying martial arts since 1998, actually before that if you count interested and self taught thru books.
I started off with Shoot Fighting, BJJ and Judo then I went to Choy Li Fut kungfu.
I've dabbled in Yang Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Bagua Chuan and now am at a dojo that teaches Judo, Aikido, BJJ & Kick Boxing (all thru individual instructors) but am currently focusing on aikido thats offered at the Dojo.
I'd say my foundation arts are the mixture of grappling along with my Choy Li Fut Kung Fu with the other arts that I have studied as complimentary arts to my foundation arts.
I chose the aikido as the new art to focus on since I couldn't find a Kung fu school that I wanted to dedicate my time and effort to since I relocated to wa.
As the aikido goes im actually enjoying it quite a bit and do like how it is different then the other arts I've studied as well as complimenting them very well. It looks like I will be focusing on the aikido while still practicing my CLF, WC, YTCC & Bagua forms.
Well thats my brief history of martial arts and I look forward to participating in the threads on this forum.

Weapons defense?
Hey guys. Im new to karate and had a interesting question.
Im really enjoying the hard work and style(matsubayashi shorin ryu).. I never honestly thought id ever enjoy it but here I am.
How does karate(shorin ryu) approach weapons defense/offense? Say a knife attack? I have been watching some karate videos and karate seams to have a start and stop feeling to it, which I don't know If its just my newb level of doing things but isn't that bad for defense against weapons?
So what are some good examples of how karate deals with knife attacks or bludgeoning attacks? Does karate teach how to use the knife? I can see some of the movements also translating to weapons work.
I know there is kobudo, but I didn't know how karate handled such things. Thanks for the information guys!

Bradley Pond camping ?
I was wondering if anyone has done any camping in the Bradley Pond area. I know there is a lean-to there, but just in case is anyone familiar with any campsites in the area?
We are planning to do some hiking up Panther, etc. and although I know it all can be done as a day hike, we like the camping almost as much. Time frame would be mid-August.
Any feedback or experience with camping in that area would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Taekwondo In Merseyside
Just wondering if anyone knows of any good taekwondo clubs in Merseyside as this isn't what I do but a friend has expressed interest in taking it up and I was going to go with her. Not sure what to look for though
Why can't the Adirondacks be more like Appalachia?
Compared to Appalachia the Adirondacks are boring.
Grassman, Wampus Beast, Wolfman, Hellhound, Devil Dog, Hellcat, Yahoo, Fire Dragon, Lizard Demon, Mothman, and my personal favorite, Sheepsquacth (I shudder to think how that one got created).
.
All we have is an occasional Bigfoot. Boring!
It must be a result of the quality of the homemade moonshine because I believe a true Adirondacker can hold their own in the liquor department.
I recently got the Destination America channel. If your looking for entertainment I'd recommend Monsters and Mysteries of America and for outright comedy Mountain Monsters.

Help my Hiza!
Ok. Im really struggling with Hiza guruma. I get the foot work, but the problem im facing is with the hands/arms. I also may be misunderstanding what im supposed to be doing with them.
Am I supposed to lift my arms, like in sasae tsurikomi or what? I know my coach was trying to explain it but at that moment over 1.5 hours in to practice my newb brain was overloading.
Is it a lifting action like stk or a kind of pulling action? I keep wanting to pull them close and off center(if that makes sense) and im told that is wrong.. I was so overwhelmed by that time but I was trying to understand.
I have been watching videos on youtube but they don't seam to be helping, no detailed explanation of what my arms are doing.
Thanks guys!

6/27/14 Peaked and Wyman Hills (Hoffman)
Parked at the Dirgylot Hill trailhead off Route 9 just north of Exit 28 in Schroon Falls. Bathed in some DEET, and then headed out. Followed the trail to the pedestrian tunnel (metal culvert) under the Northway (I-87). Continued on the dirt road to the first intersection. Turned right here (the left branch heads S toward Dirgylot Hill). At the next intersection, continued straight (the left branch heads SW toward Smith Hill). After a mile or so, the trail became more of a hunter's path. It was marked with occasional axe blazes. Soon, I reached another old road which leads up toward the notch between Wyman Hill and Peaked Hill. I followed this old road for a while and then headed SW up to the top of Peaked Hill. The woods were fairly open with some blowdown to contend with. There were nice views from the rocky summit. Got a close-up view of Hoffman and Blue Ridge to the west. To the north, could see many of the high peaks. There was also a view to the south toward Schroon Lake. I went back down and picked up the road at roughly the same spot I left it. Followed the road for a bit, and the left it again and headed NE up to Wyman Hill. There were some nice views, but not quite as open as Peaked Hill. After tagging the top, I dropped back to the road and headed back. The breezes kept the bugs from being too terrible. Nice sunny day for this adventure in the woods.

Two Stripes
Two stripes on my blue belt, chuffed to say the least, now that I'm over halfway to my goal (purple belt). Long term goal is still a black belt within ten years, I've got until 2021 to get there.
Also picked up a few things that I can't wait to work on :D

I Approve this Thread
In US politics, why is that they, the candidate themselves, state;
"I'm ____and I approve this message"
I guess they approve it, it is something positive about them and in their favor.
Why would anyone disapprove of themselves?
Is there some type of legal issue whereas the candidate has to make such a statement?

Wudangduijian
Wudangduijian (武当对剑) or Wu Dang two person sword set.
It was said that it was developed by Li Jinglin (1884-1931) with the help of other masters during his time as the deputy director of the Central Guoshu Institute established by the National Government of China in 1928.
Anyone practice this set and would like to share your experiences or anything related to two edged swords.

Kaspersky Lab discovers new Android and iOS mobile malware
Kaspersky Lab discovers new Android and iOS mobile malware; maps HackingTeams command and control servers
Today, Kaspersky Lab published a new research report mapping a massive international infrastructure used to control Remote Control System (RCS) malware implants, and identifying previously undiscovered mobile Trojans that work on both Android and iOS. These modules are part of the so-called legal spyware tool, RCS, aka Galileo, developed by the Italian company HackingTeam.
The list of victims indicated in the new research, conducted by Kaspersky Lab together with its partner Citizen Lab, includes activists and human rights advocates, as well as journalists and politicians.
RCS infrastructure
Kaspersky Lab has been working on different security approaches to locate Galileos command and control (C&C) servers around the globe. For the identification process, Kaspersky Lab experts relied on special indicators and connectivity data obtained by reverse engineering existing samples.
During the latest analysis, Kaspersky Labs researchers were able to map the presence of more than 320 RCS C&C servers in 40+ countries. The majority of the servers were based in the United States, Kazakhstan, Ecuador, the UK and Canada.
Commenting on the latest findings, Sergey Golovanov, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab, said: The presence of these servers in a given country doesnt mean to say they are used by that particular countrys law enforcement agencies. However, it makes sense for the users of RCS to deploy C&Cs in locations they control where there are minimal risks of cross-border legal issues or server seizures.
RCS mobile implants
Although in the past it had been known that HackingTeams mobile Trojans for iOS and Android existed, nobody had actually identified them before or noticed them being used in attacks. Kaspersky Labs experts have been researching the RCS malware for a couple of years now. Earlier this year they were able to identify certain samples of mobile modules that matched the other RCS malware configuration profiles in their collection. During the recent research, new variants of samples were also received from victims through the Kaspersky Lab cloud-based KSN network. In addition, the companys experts worked closely with Morgan Marquis-Boire from Citizen Lab, who has been researching the HackingTeam malware set extensively.
Infection vectors: The operators behind the Galileo RCS build a specific malicious implant for every concrete target. Once the sample is ready, the attacker delivers it to the mobile device of the victim. Some of the known infection vectors include spearphishing via social engineering often coupled with exploits, including zero-days; and local infections via USB cables while synchronizing mobile devices.
One of the major discoveries has been learning precisely how a Galileo mobile Trojan infects an iPhone: to do so the device needs to be jailbroken. However, non-jailbroken iPhones can become vulnerable too: an attacker can run a jailbreaking tool like Evasi0n via a previously infected computer and conduct a remote jailbreak, followed by the infection. To avoid infection risks, Kaspersky Labs experts recommend that you first of all dont jailbreak your iPhone, and secondly also constantly update the iOS on your device to the latest version.
Customized Spying: The RCS mobile modules are meticulously designed to operate in a discreet manner, for instance by paying close attention to the mobile devices battery life. This is implemented through carefully customized spying capabilities, or special triggers: for example, an audio recording may start only when a victim is connected to a particular Wi-Fi network (for example, the network of a media house), or when he/she changes the SIM card, or while device is charging.
In general, the RCS mobile Trojans are capable of performing many different kinds of surveillance functions, including reporting the targets location, taking photos, copying events from the calendar, registering new SIM cards inserted in the infected device, and interception of phone calls and messages; these include messages sent from specific applications such as Viber, Whatsapp, and Skype, in addition to regular SMS texts.
Detection: Kaspersky Lab products detect the RCS/DaVinci/Galileo spyware tools as: Backdoor.Win32.Korablin, Backdoor.Win64.Korablin, Backdoor.Multi.Korablin, Rootkit.Win32.Korablin, Rootkit.Win64.Korablin, Rootkit.OSX.Morcut, Trojan.OSX.Morcut, Trojan.Multi.Korablin, Trojan.Win32.Agent, Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Korablin, Trojan-PSW.Win32.Agent, Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Mekir and Backdoor.AndroidOS.Criag.

Kamae question
Hey guys a question
I picked up a copy of Carsten kuhn's 'ten ryaku no maki' and was browsing through it when I came across two kamae I haven't encountered before. One is called 'Ryuhyo no kamae' and the other is called 'Ryuhyo fusetsu no kamae.' I've not seen these taught in a class before and I also haven't found much online or in other books referencing them. I have two main questions
1. Which schools do they belong to?
2. What are the applications of them? Are they linked to any particular techniques or waza?
Here are pictures if it helps

Divorce.
MAP and Zinowor are getting a divorce. Too many feminists and holier than thou people on this forum. I never really grounded here, because of that, and it would seem I overstayed my welcome.
No hard feelings, it just wasn't meant to be.
Goodbye everyone. :D
p.s. How can I delete my account? Or could a mod do it for me?

Snowy vs Giant... Which is harder?
I referenced this in my Family Hiking Near Wells thread, but it probably deserves a thread of its own.
After doing Snowy Mountain last year, my son and I bagged the highest peak in the Southern Adirondacks. If we want to step it up, we have to hit the High Peaks.
After hearing the name "Giant Mountain" my son who's now 7 is wanting to give it a go. Coincidentally, its also one of the easier High Peaks. How does it compare to Snowy Mountain? I was thinking of camping at the Giant's Washbowl, taking the Ridge Trail up... then taking the Roaring Brook trail back down, returning to camp... and then home.
Is it A LOT harder than Snowy... if not, maybe we'll bail and do Wakely or Pillsbury closer to Wells?

Ground fighting in the Takamatsuden
Not sure that this is a very controversial subject, it seems that many people inside the Takamatsuden aren't well versed in ground fighting although there are two jujutsu schools in the Bujinkan curriculum and perhaps more in the Genbukan. There are some very interesting sweeps, trips, chokes, and escapes from the normal positions as well. The biggest issue seems to be that since people spend a lot of time on the other myriad aspects of fighting found in these arts(weapons, striking, throwing, etc), they miss out on the wealth of information out there.
There are a lot of supplementary and fundamental skills found in the ryutai undo and taihenjutsu as well that are related to ground fighting. A lot of the principles are the same as when restrained against a wall, accept that you are horizontal so you have to train a different orientation and get used to using your muscles and body accordingly. There are also many different sword drawing and weapons skills from compromised positions, but in general, all of these things seem to be taught randomly if at all. This has wrongly led some to believe that the Takamatsuden doesn't have much use when it comes to ground fighting.
Another issue is that traditionally, ground fighting was not the major focus for battlefield warfare. By the time it had gone to the ground, it was usually the coup de grace(head count time) being delivered. So, the general consensus is that ground fighting is not the best choice for dealing with armed or multiple attackers. However, at the higher levels of these arts, are some people who spent a lot of time training in ground fighting so their opinion is based on experience and coming from a level of ability that many seem to lack.
Takagi ryu is often considered a bodyguard school, so one would wonder why a bodyguard would not have the skills to subdue an opponent on the ground, especially as drawing weapons in the presence of one's liege would usually be inappropriate. So clearly, there is no need to run to outside sources to make up for a lack of jujutsu skills in the Takamatsuden, they are there, the question is whether or not you are learning them and training in them as diligently as many do the standup skills.
Just to recap, all of these things are found in the Takamatsuden curriculum:
Throws to pins and submission skills
Escapes from being pinned, anti-submission skills
Seated fighting skills(from seiza and fudoza primarily)
Special chokes, sweeps, sacrifice throws, trips, and ukemi skills for standing and ground fighting
Specialized weapon handling for when you are on the ground
Supplemental exercises and calisthenics to develop one's body to be able to use the different techniques taught later
Thoughts?

censoring my thread
hey guys i posted an informative thread in off topic at http://ift.tt/1lTzROX
it listed a news article and a link to another forum discussing an MMA match with Jon Fitch and a picture of him.
Moderator Mitch seems to have edited it and removed all links and i cant seem to get a response as to why.
can understand linking to another forum (although completely unrelated to martial arts) could be questionable.. but the post was butchered pretty bad leaving an open ended ubb code and pretty much removed of any useful data.
would appreciate some clarity on the matter.

Kframe's training logs.
Hi all, I was encouraged to try and write down a training log. So im going to do that.
Today was my 4th judo class. We covered a lot of things and its always a heck of a work out.
We started with some running, forwards and backwards and some foot work drills thrown in for good measure. After that, we did some kaiten rolling, which TBH I picked up quickly thanks to BBT. We only did forward rolling. Then we did cartwheels, which at my size and poor balance was more like flopwheels.. After that it was stretching.
FYI, for the purposes of this log, ill not state the warm ups in details anymore, unless they change on that day. They usually are the same each day.
We did the go kyo. I got lots of work on the following things. 1 De-ashi-harai.
2. Hiza-guruma. 3. Sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi. 4. uki-goshi, 5. o-ouchi-gari and ko-uchi-gari.
This took a lot of time, but after this, we did some work on chokes from newaza and standing. He likes to point out things that work both standing and on the ground. Which I like IMHO. I am definitely not used to gi chokes, they are awkward.
The class officially ended and the brown and black belts went to the side and worked on some Competition techniques. By this time I was totally spent, so he allowed me to rest a bit and explained what they were doing, while guiding me through the kodakan judo book. After a few minoutes he took me aside and worked with me one on one with my go kyo work for about 20 more minutes.
I seam to be struggling with hiza-garuma and sasae-tsuri-komi-ashi. With hiza when I step out and bring my leg up straight on his leg above the knee, I am feeling like I have no strength in my arms to move his arms up. (im not explaining this well sadly.) I have much work on those 2 as I struggle to find my distance each time.
After we did that for a while we then worked on our Heiki Ryu jiu jitsu, which builds off of the judo work.
I had a great time and am very sore and tired. Not to mention hungry.
A goal to strive for.
Hi judo forum. I don't hang out here much, as there doesn't seam to be much drama here in this forum.
After leaving BBT I joined a karate and judo club. Both under the same roof, but separate class's all for one price. I am seriously enjoying it.
My judo Teacher is Mr Bob Bonner. He is a fantastic person great personality. He is up in age, but that has not stopped his skill. I don't know if it is coincidence but I get a similar vibe from him that I did my grandfather whom I was close to.
However I do now know how many years he will be teaching. So I am making it my goal, to achieve Shodan before he retires. Now I know that means lots and lots of pain and exhaustion and work. I feel I owe it to him to try my hardest and get there. I know that shodan is not a big thing, but it is to me. It shows commitment imho.

Knee replacement surgery.
Just curious how many of you have had knee replacement surgery or knee Surgey in general.
How painful was it?
How long was the recovery time?
How did it impact you future participation in your chosen MA?
A few years back when I still played soccer I had a friend (sports therapist) have a look at my knees and she was sure I was going to need surgery in my late 30 early 40 depending on how hard I was on them. Well, my job is exceedingly hard on my knees, im concerned that need surgery will be necessary much sooner then I would like. I wont lie, the idea of surgery let alone knee surgery terrifies me.

End of My Rope Need advice for situation.
I live in a smallish community of foreigners in China, and normally we all get along well, however once in awhile their are some idiots to deal with. Normally the idiots learn their lesson after they piss of the the community.
However tonight one such idiot was harassing my friends at the local watering hole. He has caused problems, been in at least two fights, one of which I had to aggressively break up a few months ago. It was with a good friend of mine. Around that time he had also had went up to a female friend of mind and told her that he wanted lick her (somewhere I can't say because of ToS). She had turned her down and the next day he went up to her and ranted to her about respect. Anyway that is a bit of the history.
Tonight another friend of mine was invited to be celebrity bartender and this guy shows up tonight to watch the game. He starts telling her she's drunk and that she should go home. I don't have a problem with that specifically but the way he did it was quite sexist. When her best friend came up to him and said we're looking after her and that she'll get home safely, he told her to duck off. Actually he pretty much told everyone to duck off.
Actually he didn't didn't leave until the girl who he had wanted to lick had come outside and had words with him in which he told her repeatedly to shut her lady parts. The girl he was originally harassing tonight was physically hiding behind the girl who was standing up to him tonight. A sassy English girl I might add.
It took a lot of self control to not punch this guy tonight. I even told other, more level headed friends (including the owner) to go out and talk to the guy. But that didn't seem to work because the dude didn't listen.
I've tried avoiding that guy, and I've talked with the owners of the bar about banning him but I don't think that they will do that because apparently he leaving soon anyway. I am glad that it didn't get violent this time, I don't want to hurt people and I don't want the reputation of someone is violent. I think I will put up an message on the social sites about this guy, and warn people about him. I am getting quite tired of this nonsense.

Does your nail polish last longer if it's more expensive? chanel Consumer Reports magazine says "no," at least according to a recent test of seven nail polishes. One of Revlon's brands, Sinful Colors, which is available at drugstores, lasted the longest according to the magazine's test, even though the price tag is only $2. Following close behind were two other brands under the Revlon umbrella, CND Vinylux Weekly Polish and Revlon Colorstay Longwear, which were $9.90 and $6.20, respectively. Chanel Handbags Meanwhile, Chanel's No. 475 Dragon nail polish, which costs $27, ranked sixth. Chanel Bags If the product line had a base or top coat, that was used as well, the magazine said. Chanel Bags Outlet Read More: Salon Secrets You Need to Know Before You Go Chanel Bags The magazine hired a professional manicurist to apply nail polish to 10 volunteer panelists. Each panelist wore two products simultaneously, each on every other fingernail of both hands, Consumer Reports explained for its July issue. Chanel Bags Then, on the seventh, 10th, and 14th days after each manicure, two trained testers evaluated the panelistsâ fingernails and scored how the nail polish looked. The magazine said it then recruited 10 additional volunteers to apply and remove the polishes at home and assess "ease of use." The three Revlon products looked "very good" through day 7 and "good" on 10. With a base and top coat added, the total price of Sinful Colors came to $10. Testers said it took slightly longer to dry however, the magazine reported. CND didn't require a base coat, and the top coat is about another $10, bringing the total to about $19.80. Chanel's $27 product didn't fare so well. Four of 10 home-use panelists said it "chipped the day they applied it," the magazine said. The base and top coat cost an additional $52. A spokeswoman for Chanel provided a statement to ABC News explaining that Le Vernis de Chanel is "designed to find the optimum balance between color, shine, lacquered effect, lasting hold, speed of drying and nail hydration and protection." "These qualities are widely recognized and appreciated by our customers, as can be seen from the success of the Le Vernis range. There is therefore more to Le Vernis de Chanel than just lasting hold," Chanel said in the statement. "Also, we confirm that it is essential to properly follow the different steps of application to ensure the maximum shine and durability, by applying a protective base coat, then two thin coats of Le Vernis, and finishing with an application of top coat, allowing enough time for drying between each application." Here are Consumer Reports' scores of the nail polishes, the color tested and price: 1. Sinful Colors Professional: 70 #852 GoGo Girl: $10 set; $2 polish 2. CND Vinylux Weekly Polish: 67 #158 Wildfire: $19.80 set; $9.90 polish 3. Revlon Colorstay Longwear: 63 #120 Red Carpet: $18.60 set; $6.20 polish 4. Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure: 50 #470 Red My Lip: $7.10 polish 5. Covergirl Outlast Stay Brilliant: 48 #180 Lasting Love: $5.30 polish 6. Chanel Le Vernis: 23 #475 Dragon: $79 set; $27 polish 7. Nutra Nail Gel Perfect: 10 #12760 Passion: $12 polish

wing chun vs wrestling
saw this recently and thought it was a wing chun guy who had learnt some wrestling (frames) to survive the clinch for a wee bit.
I also noticed how tired he is and how poor his recovery is, after only a short semi compliant demo
what do you guys think?
Is there any Spiritual implication of MA?
I look up "spiritual implication of Martial Arts" with quotes in Google and there is no result, maybe members of this forums can give me some thoughts or experiences on the subject.

The Luuuk Banking fraud Campaign
The Luuuk banking fraud campaign: half a million euros stolen in a single week
The experts at Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team have discovered evidence of a targeted attack against the clients of a large European bank. According to the logs found in the server used by the attackers, apparently in the space of just one week cybercriminals stole more than half a million Euros from accounts in the bank. The first signs of this campaign were discovered on 20 January this year when Kaspersky Lab’s experts detected a C&C server on the net. The server’s control panel indicated evidence of a Trojan program used to steal money from clients’ bank accounts.
The experts also detected transaction logs on the server, containing information about which sums of money were taken from which accounts. All in all, more than 190 victims could be identified, most of them located in Italy and Turkey. The sums stolen from each bank account, according to the logs, ranged between 1,700 to 39,000 Euros.
The campaign was at least one week old when the C&C was discovered, having started no later than Jan. 13 2014. In that time the cybercriminals successfully stole more than 500,000 Euros. Two days after GReAT discovered the C&C server, the criminals removed every shred of evidence that might be used to trace them. However, experts think this was probably linked to changes in the technical infrastructure used in the malicious campaign rather spelling the end of the Luuuk campaign.
“Soon after we detected this C&C server, we contacted the bank’s security service and the law enforcement agencies, and submitted all our evidence to them,” said Vicente Diaz, Principal Security Researcher at Kaspersky Lab.
Malicious tools used
In the LUUUK case, experts have grounds to believe that important financial data was intercepted automatically and fraudulent transactions were carried out as soon as the victim logged onto their online bank accounts.
“On the C&C server we detected there was no information as to which specific malware program was used in this campaign. However, many existing Zeus variations (Citadel, SpyEye, IceIX, etc.) – have that necessary capability. We believe the malware used in this campaign could be a Zeus flavor using sophisticated web injects on the victims,” added Vicente Diaz.
Money divestment schemes
The stolen money was passed on to the crooks’ accounts in an interesting and unusual way. Our experts noticed a distinctive quirk in the organization of the so-called ‘drops’ (or money-mules), where participants in the scam receive some of the stolen money in specially created bank accounts and cash out via ATMs. There were evidences of several different ‘drop’ groups, each assigned with different sums of money. One group was responsible for transferring sums of 40-50,000 Euros, another with 15-20,000 and the third with no more than 2,000 Euros.
“These differences in the amount of money entrusted to different drops may be indicative of varying levels of trust for each ‘drop’ type. We know that members of these schemes often cheat their partners in crime and abscond with the money they were supposed to cash. The Luuuk’s bosses may be trying to hedge against these losses by setting up different groups with different levels of trust: the more money a ‘drop’ is asked to handle, the more he is trusted,” added Vicente Diaz.
The C&C server related to The Luuuk was shut down shortly after the investigation started. However, the complexity level of the MITB operation suggests that the attackers will continue to look for new victims of this campaign. Kaspersky Lab’s experts are engaged in an on-going investigation in The Luuuk’s activities.
Kaspersky Fraud Prevention vs. the Luuuk
The evidence uncovered by Kaspersky Lab’s experts indicates that the campaign was most probably organized by professional criminals. However, the malicious tools they used to steal money can be countered effectively by security technologies. For instance, Kaspersky Lab has developed Kaspersky Fraud Prevention – a multi-tier platform to help financial organizations protect their clients from online financial fraud. The platform includes components that safeguard client devices from many types of attacks, including Man-in-the-Browser attacks, as well as tools that can help companies detect and block fraudulent transactions.
For more information on The Luuuk campaign, read our blog at Securelist.com.

Violent assaults going on in the Neighborhood that I work in
Yep. Women are being attacked, sometimes by multiple attackers, in the area I work in. All four women were alone in the neighborhood late at night.
It hits home not only because it is where I work, but because I ever so slightly know one of the victims. So, even though I barely know her, it makes it hit home and feel more personal than your average news story.
I find myself wanting to give my female co-workers a crash course in self defense, but I know I really can't. The best I can do is throw in a couple of things I hope stick. Like mentioning how dangerous it is to be texting and walking down the street instead of having an awareness of your surroundings. Or when talking about targets for self defense, suggesting a knee is a better target than an ankle because it is usually going to be easier to hit. (co worker said she would target the ankle.)
No, I am not in any real danger. I am not alone there and not there late at night. So I don't fit the list of victims. I always use positioning/ situational awareness. And I will be extra cautious. But my concern is not for myself.I feel just really helpless that this is going on in an area I have worked 20 years and I can't do anything really. I worry about the patrons who live in the area. I care about this community.
I just needed to vent. Thanks.

"Professor"
Please consider this a spin-off from the Alan Thornton thread. (Or not, if you don't care)
From time to time you see the title professor being used in the martial arts world. Now, I spend part of my life in the academic world where I'm very familiar with the title, and aspire to it myself one day but not got there yet (maybe this year at last, but that's another story).
What does it take to be a professor in the academic world? Typically something like:-
- A first degree in their field (3-4 years of full time study)
- A doctorate (same again, making an examined original contribution to the sum of human knowledge in their subject)
- A track record of successfully supervising other people's doctorates.
- A publication record usually of 20-100 peer reviewed research publications, usually with at least a third of those as the lead author. As a crude rule of thumb, 3 research publications is equivalent to a research doctorate.
- An international reputation (as in, people from all over the world are actively using their work and seeking their advice)
The fastest I've ever seen anybody do this is about 20 years from leaving school: so let's say about 50,000 hrs of dedicated effort; most (of the small proportion of academics who ever get there) take double that.
It wouldn't be all that hard to provide an equivalence to that within martial arts practice: something like, let's see
- Dan grade through 1000-2000 hrs of training
- At least that much more personal training again.
- Have trained and graduate double figures of dan grades examined by other people
- Significant international teaching experience
- Running a reasonable sized organisation
- Be able to demonstrate to a panel of very senior peers that they have developed and improved their own art significantly.
- Have written authoritative texts being used across the martial arts world.
Do many of the people adopting the title "professor" in the MA world come at-all close to that? Does that matter?
Is it just an anglicisation of the French "professeur", or "teacher", and we shouldn't get precious about it?

Mount Marcy
Hey all,
I am planning a trip to the Adirondacks in mid August. Looking to hike up Marcy and maybe another. I have been trying to find maps with designated first-come, first-serve campsites and I can't seem to find any.
I came up last fall randomly and played everything by ear and luckily it all worked out. I went to keene valley, saw a pull off near Chapel pond, set up camp at a designated camp spot and hiked up Giant mountain. It couldn't have been a better time.
This time I would like to see it work out like that again - just with a little more planning.
So...
Is there a map of some kind where it lists these designated camp spots?
Also, can I leave my car at a trail head over night and just find a spot off the trail to camp?
I'd appreciate your help
Thanks

anyone tie any crayfish imitations. I see many of them in some of the ponds I fish and have seen them in fish. Seems like a good imitation could be an effective fly

planning my yearly backpacking trip
My friends and I a planning on hiking Macomb, South Dix, East Dix, Hough, and Dix. We are planning on parking at the end of Elk Lake Road. I see on my map that there are two leantos on the trail heading towards these mountains... Slide and Lillian Brook. Where are the tent sites in this area? and which ones would be best? We will have 6 to 8 people in out party.
Are we able to have a fire in this area?
Also to those of you that have done all these mountains at once which direction is best to ascend?
any info will help thank you

Rifle regulations for deer hunting
First off, PLEASE, I am NOT trying to stir up a debate here, I'm just looking for an answer to this question. If I travel to the Adirondacks this fall for deer hunting, is there any way or configuration or whatever that a AR-15, owned by a non-resident, is legal to possess and use for deer hunting in New York State?
I know the SAFE act changed a lot of things, but I'm not especially familiar with the details.
THANKS!

Why Train With Weapons At All?
Why train with weapons at all?
Kali is a weapons based martial art.
The majority of ordinary people, disregard the need to gain even a basic understanding of proficiency with weapons for self defence.
If asked why, they would put forward some reasonable sounding arguments. ‘Society has evolved to the point where we do not suffer armed attacks from invaders’. ‘We have a system of laws and a police force to protect us’. ‘People aren’t allowed to carry weapons on their person under the law, so what is the point?’
These arguments are all put forward to those who train in a weapons based fighting system. At best your art will be thought of as redundant, a quaint relic of the past – like learning basket weaving. They will shake their heads and wonder why you do not get on with more practical things. At worst you will be regarded as someone with sociopathic tendencies. The logic often runs as follows – only criminals and misfits mess around with weapons, so if you are into that, you must have some anti-social tendencies yourself.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The fact is that the above arguments fall away when the person is on the receiving end of a physical altercation, such as a mugging. It is then that their inability to cope with the even that has transpired is brought home in an overwhelming way. The person will react by blaming society for going to the dogs, blaming the police for not being there, blaming government for not providing enough police etc. But the one thing they will almost certainly not do is look at themselves and their failure to prepare. It becomes apparent that the logical arguments presented to the functional martial artist were a cover for a deep rooted fear of physical aggression.
I’m not saying that there are armed assailants on every street corner. In my view martial arts schools can often be guilty of conflating the danger. Thankfully, this kind of violence is a rare occurence. However the impact of these kind of assaults should they do happen take a great toll on people physically and psychologically. In a way it is similar to the risk of fire. We all know that fires are relatively rare, yet public buildings are fitted with fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, and employees in offices are required to carry out fire drills. That is because we know that the damage can be catastrophic and that prevention goes a long way.
A similar line of thinking with regard to weapons is necessary for anyone who practices self defence.

EURUSD
The Euro consolidates around 1.36 handle after yesterdays repeated upside rejection and quick reversal to the levels below 1.36. Price action on hourly timeframe remains directionless and studies hold in neutral mode. However, positive tone persists on 4-hour chart, as the price remains above bull-trendline off 1.3511 low and bullish flag pattern is forming. Completion of the pattern requires lift above yesterdays high at 1.3625 and more significant 1.3642, 19 June peak, to resume recovery from double-bottom at 1.35 zone and open key near-term barrier and pivotal point at 1.3676, 06 June high. Conversely, slide below higher low at 1.3563, also Fibonacci 61.8% retracement of 1.3511/1.3642 upleg, to revive bears and signal lower top formation at 1.3642.

Cable is at the back foot in the near-term, as yesterdays acceleration below recent consolidation floor and psychological support at 1.7000, signaled possible deeper pullback. Near-term technical indicators are establishing in the negative territory and support further weakness. However, break below 1.6920, 18 June higher low / 21/22 May previous peaks and Fibonacci 38.2% of 1.6697/1.7061 upleg, as well as psychological 1.69 support, is required to confirm near-term bearish scenario. The pair remains at the back foot and returns to the levels close to 101.80 higher base, after repeated upside failure at 102.15. Negatively aligned 4-hour studies are supportive for such scenario, with clearance of recent peaks at 102.15/18, required to neutralize and open the upper targets instead.
