I Approve this Thread

In US politics, why is that they, the candidate themselves, state;



"I'm ____and I approve this message"



I guess they approve it, it is something positive about them and in their favor.



Why would anyone disapprove of themselves?



Is there some type of legal issue whereas the candidate has to make such a statement?
