PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE WHEN STARTING FIRES AND DO NOT EVER START FIRES ON PINE DUFF.
These pics are from a trip into the Siamese Ponds Wilderness area my brothers and I took a few years back. Thought I lost this set, but came across them recently and thought I would share.
This is about 2 miles in from the trail head off of route 8 on the way to the lean to. About a mile in we start to smell smoke, a little further along it started to become visible, eventually we spotted the source. It was about 50 yards off the trail on a ridge, this is how we found it...
Attachment 14700
The abandoned fire pit continued to burn into the duff and root systems of nearby trees. Down the other side of the ridge was the Sacandaga river. We dug out the pit and hauled (many) garbage bags full of water up to douse it. Scary stuff. We later notified DEC.
Needless to say we were all deeply troubled by this experience. The position of this fire, time of year (August) and the ignorance or carelessness of the person(s) that made it were all perfect ingredients for devastation. Please do your best to take care of the wild when spending time in it.
