High Peaks Region Help

So I am taking my wife and 3 year old daughter to Lake George for our anniversary, we will only be spending two nights there (this Friday and Saturday). We are driving up from New York City and anticipate arriving in Lake George early Friday Afternoon, and leaving Sunday morning to try to beat the rush back into the city.

So essentially we have two thirds of Friday, and all of Saturday to enjoy some of the recreational offerings of Lake George. I have planned to take them to one of the beaches; pony/horseback riding; a lake cruise; lunch on main street; and a drive up Prospect Mountain Drive (if anyone has any additional cool activities to suggest, I am all ears).

Since this is my wife’s first time to the Adirondacks (she is from out west and laughs at what we perceive to be as mountains and refers to them as “hills”), I also want to show her the high peak region. So I was thinking about squeezing in some time to try to drive over to Lake Placid, and maybe a detour onto the Adirondack Loj Road, to show her that, we have real mountains too – and though they may not be as rugged and high as those out West – they are equally as beautiful in their own way. Problem is, with my limited schedule and time availability, do you all think this is a feasible detour? Google Maps puts it as a 90 minute drive one way to Lake Placid from Lake George; so at the very least over 3 hours of time will be spent going and coming. I am not even sure how much traffic there will be and if that will make the duration of the excursion even longer. Is it even worth it? Are there closer vantage points to Lake George where the High Peaks can be observed in all their glory? How about from the top of Prospect Mountain?

Any tips or info into this will be much appreciated!
