Planning my first hiking trip, needing some help!

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could give me a few options on hiking trails in the High Peaks. I've never been there, but I would love to go on a couple of 2-5 day trips during the summer. I currently live in Montreal and don't have a car, so getting there will probably end up being a little complicated...but transportation aside, given that I could get to Lake Placid, where would you guys suggest I start? This is my first time planning a hiking trip, so I would like to make sure I don't end up lost. I've hiked before, but with guides or on familiar trails, so this is a little be daunting.

I will be going there with a friend of mine, and we were hoping to find a trail that would allow us to set up camp somewhere new every night, and to return to Lake Placid once done (preferably without back tracking, a new trail to return would be great). Naturally I would need to confirm that there will be plenty of water sources along the way, and the cherry on top would be to have places to camp where we could make a fire. Naturally, I will need a trail that would lead me back to Lake Placid in order for me to make it back home.

It's important to note that I wont have a car, and I believe the furthest I could get (unless I could be given specific bus services) is as far as Lake Placid. So preferably the trails would need to start close from there.

Hope someone can help me out! Thanks ahead of time :)

Bonus Question: What are the temperatures like in June/July/August? I have a decent amount of hiking gear, but nothing for cold weather, and was hoping to go when it starts to get warm.
