Bears Love Screen Porches

Apparently they make a good sign post for male bears in their quest for a mate.

The last two springs have seen my porch used as a big scratching post. This seems only to occur mid-May to end of June (mating season). The rest of the year they keep their distance.

This weekend I found extensive damage to the wood panels along with the scratch markings. He definitely was NOT trying to get in since the adjoining screen panel was out so he easily could have climbed up. No its simply a calling card.

I wish I knew how to break the habit. I always place ammonia in trays and mothballs on the porch floor when I'm gone but now they are doing damage to the outside of porch. When I left this time I also sprayed a combination of super hot sauce and the commercial spray used to keep animals away from garbage.

Hope it works because at this rate I won't have a porch by next year.

Anyone else have this problem and any suggestions?
