Discussion: studying multiple martial arts.

Hey guys. I have a interesting thing going on. I am at a place with several available styles to train in.

Now as you may or may not know I am currently studying FMA. I have since also started judo and karate and heike ryu. I guess im thinking about possible clash's between the styles.

Karate and judo fit nicely together. The Heike ryu, also fits with the karate and judo. Seeing as it's throws are all judo throws and it has judos newaza. Its like self defense+judo. As I found out the stuff im doing in heiki ryu are also being taught(albeit in a far more limited fashion) in the self defense portion of the karate class. Things like the standing locks are nearly the same.

Then there is FMA. Which I LOVE.. However it only meets once a week at current. Which will change no doubt in the future but, I have way to much time on my hands and as a food addict that is bad.

The fma meets 1.5 hours before the karate, so I can train the 2 back to back on those days.

Im a touch concerned that the unarmed portion of FMA will conflict with the karate training. I don't know about the other FMA styles but we spend nearly as much class time on empty hands as we do weapon work.

So can I expect many conflicts regarding the usage of the techniques of FMA and Shorin ryu Karate? So far, just based on my VERY limited exposure I see some movements from our FMA defense drills that are very similar to karate defensive movements. However I don't know how far that similarity runs. They both seam to have defensive tactics that focus on the same angles as each other, but the actual mechanics are a bit different.

I didn't have this problem in mma as they all were different enough from each other. The Kickboxing class was just a expanded boxing class, as all the techs of boxing were used as well as kickboxing specific stuff. BJJ was BJJ and confounded me to no end with its spastic training methodology.

If anyone has any advice on keeping them straight in my head im all ears. So far its not that big of a problem. Well that's not true. In karate class during the self defense portion we had to do a Shoulder lock takedown. Well the first time I instinctively did the FMA version I had just worked on in lock flow 1 instead of the Heike ryu version they were doing..

Right now I am trying to keep it all straight by keeping FMA prioritized as my primary weapons art and trying to keep the others as my unarmed in my mind.

So how did you keep your training straight while studying multiple arts? What advice do you have for others?

I hope this sparks a discussion about how you are handling training multiple arts.
