I am not even a baseball fan, but I am quite saddened to hear Baseball Hall of Famer Tony Gwyn died today. He had salivatory gland cancer. Something he believed was caused by his use of chewing tobacco.
Tony Gwynn was more than a baseball player to San Diego. he was an icon. He did so much for the community of San Diego over the decades. He got in trouble with the baseball players union for turning away BIG bucks form bigger markets to stay playing in San Diego.
By all accounts, he was a genuinly nice guy. Played several college sports here and was a coach for Aztec baseball until his death.
San Diego tragically lost a similar icon in football player Junior Seau only a couple of years ago- due to suicide.
Rest In Peace Tony Gwynn
